I got my seed in the mail today. Thank you ZZsBabiez!! I called all the nurserys looking for Coir and most said "uhhh, don't carry it but we have other soil less mixes". Here's the question can I used other soil less mixtures? If so what kind, Just spaghmun peat?? OOPS that was more than one question :o) TIA Lauri
Newbe Brug owner to be...
Most of the well known Potting mixes are soil-less ( go figure)
Just look at the list of ingredients if you are not sure.
awesome, lauri. seed-starting is fun. if you still want coir, pet stores usually carry them (lizard bedding).
joyce has a cool way to start her seeds, and i have yet to try. she did start a thread a week or so ago.
=)
please keep us posted.
So is coir the seed germinating medium du jour? I haven't been keeping up with the threads lately. I have been using it all winter for cuttings and have found it is no better than anything else I have tried, worse than some. I loved it at first because it is so neat when you add water, the texture is fantastic and you think nothing would rot in it. But it can. LOL.
And it actually will dry out even if sealed in a plastic bag, so if you use it be aware of that. I will have to try it on seeds now if people here are liking it for that. Just for fun! LOL
If you want some, go to your local hydroponics store. It is a hot commodity there. They seem to have it in every size! At mine, they were giving it free in the $3 when it first came in because it was a new product. I also added it to my soil to lighten it up.
Here is a site that talks about it.

It all sounds so good. LOL
Is this the stuff that is good for seed starting?

lauri, watch out. hydroponics store is muy dangerous.
Oh great LOL just what I need a new addiction, may have to clean out a corner in the little barn...Maybe I'll check the pet store first it's least hazzard sounding, yea good idea. I am weak you know. Thanks everyone, going to find Joyce's thread...Lauri
Lauri... I'm too new to brugs to go by anything I said or did..Someone, please tell her!
I just shared some extra seeds to pass on the kindness..
Hey you have sprouts LOL so you must be doing something right :o) I'm going to try any way anyhow LOL Lauri
Hey Joyce, if something works, it works whether you are a newbie or not! I hope I have time later to look thru some threads for all the good advice I have missed.
I'm so glad you got answers!! I saw this earlier today without any, but I kill 8 out of ten seeds, and didn't want to answer !!! I can tell you about cuttings, hybridizing, invitro fertilization, proper use of chemicals, even how to build a greenhouse, or how to set up an auto watering system, but not how to grow seeds!!! LoL !!! We all learn our strengths and weaknesses sooner or later!!! Welcome to the wonderful world of Brugs!!!
Lauri we can learn together..!Won't that be fun? :o)
Loretta...
Loretta It's going to be a blast, Hopefully we will have Brugs coming outa our ears....Lauri

Loretta...
I think I look at mine too much and they're bashful..LOL....I can't find kell's thread either but am still looking =o)) Lauri
has anyone tried planting seed in egg cartons with "jiffy potting mix"????
When I had a girl scout troop we did,it was easy and fun and everything grew for the kids..Are you talking about for the brugs? If you know any easy tricks let us know,we're open for suggestions and all the help you can give us.. ;o)))
Loretta...
Purplepetunia, I bet that could work. Brug seeds like some light so plant on top of your soil and just gently push in.
I find if you close them in a moist, clear plastic bag, you get the greenhouse effect and they like that too!
The older your seed, the slower to germinate. Do not give up until your seed has rotted. It can take some time. Did you peel your seed? That helps if the seed is old. I peel all my seed but do not soak it. I know others soak it to get it going faster.
What thread are you looking of mine? The search engine is off so it is sure tough finding anything.
Kell we were looking for the thread where you explained how you started your Brug seed. But after reading till my eyes crossed I found it!!!And added it to may favorites so I don't loose it again. Hope you don't mind a thousand questions I'll have alot of them.....Lauri
Im sure glad you found it for us Lauri,I put it on my thread watcher too..kell don't hide from us we will be needing your advice lots..!! ;o)))
Loretta...
please tell me how to find Kell's thread on seed planting. I did use egg cartons when i taught preschool. We also used paper cups and grew marigolds for Mothers Day. Haven't had any experience planting seed in several years. Sure want to increase my brug inventory and want to get my brug seeds started right.
thanks,
Chris
Hi Chris, The way I found it was this way.... go to the home page and click>..memberslist....then type in this name into the box ....zville123....then click on, view threads by zville123 then it's the post dated12/11/2003 I think it's the frist on on the list...I got the name and link from someone....sorry can't remember who....... and forgot to mark it... Hope this helps, Lauri
Lauri, that is how I learned. By asking tons of questions and by just trying different things till I found what worked for me. When I began seed starting we did it in wet paper towels in plastic bags. I would tape them to the side my computer for warmth! That worked also, but I would lose about half to fungus. Susie was my mentor, she taught me the basics. I can still remember her teaching me how to pollinate. Oh and how to peel seeds long distance. She finally gave up and sent me some peeled seeds. LOL
LOL. I had forgotten about that thread.

Here is what I said:
Hi Denise!! Welcome to Dave's and to the brug eworld. I too start my seeds in rockwool. I love it. I rarely have a problem in fact too many germinate in it. However lots of people love using just regular potting soil too. From what I have read on here. they pour boiling water thru it to sterilize it, then place seeds on top of it, gently pressed in. They like the light, so do not cover them.
Place them in a clear plastic bag, or use some kind of covering. Some use those seed domes. I use clear plastic bags closed tightly. You want to create a mini greenhouse effect. Place under lights or on a window sill. They do like to be kept warm. I have them under a cool light and a warm light, both fluorescent. I keep them there till they are to be moved outside in spring. I move mine to red 16 ounce cups when they are about 2 to 4 inches high.
Here are directions for how I use rockwool if you want to try that. It is fast and easy!
I take the rockwool and break it apart with my hands to fit into my tupperware. I then take it to the sink and fill it with warm water to cover. I then turn the container over with my hands on the rockwool to keep it from falling out. I drain all excess water out. I take my seeds and slightly push them into the holes in the rockwool so I can see them. If I have more seeds than holes, I take a knife and make enough little slices in the rockwool to accommodate them all.
I then take a plastic bag and under the faucet and run a little water in it. I then swish the water around the bag and then turn it upside down and drain it. I then place my tupperware in it, blow some air into it, twist the top closed and secure it with a velcro tie. I put it directly under my lights on my seedlings rack.
I takes me about 2 minutes if that, to do it all!
When ready to plant in dirt, (WASH HANDS FIRST) I just open the bag and tear off the cube that has the seedling in it. I take my new pot, with dirt already in the bottom, place the rockwool cube in it, fill dirt around it and on top of it, press dirt firmly around. And water! I then prop up any remaining cubes not ready to plant up and blow air in bag and reclose! Then back under the lights.
GOOD LUCK!!
Here are some seedlings in rockwool.
