H. cinnamomifolia from Logees

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Has anyone ever had blooms on the small leafed cinnamomifolia from Logees? Is it truely H. cinnamomifolia? DH is about to die with anticipation and wonder of why HIS H. cinnamomifolia won't bloom? Would be a nice April birthday present it I could get this sucker to bloom for him.

It's big and healthy but nada on the blooms.

I got to spend an unheard of entire day in the greenhouse yesterday. Just as the Texas gulf coast is about to move into the most dangerous "winter" season, if it's going to get ugly it will be in the next 6 weeks......

Peduncles forming:

The H's

pentalphlebia
pimenteliana
affinis carnosa

Peduncles with definite buds:

BSI-1 x australis
pubicalyx Red Buttons
cv. Christine
vittelina
variegated multiflora
multiflora
obscura - but about to blast I think
NOID carnosa, formerly tagged as H. carnosa Snowball.....the blooms are pink.

About to die:

cutting of H. pubicalyx Dapple Gray
pubicalyx Bright One - big plant, now with leathery leaves. Root rot obviously.

Eriostemma's - STABLE!!!!!Yeah!!!

I didn't know there was a "small leafed" H. cinnamomifolia. H. purpurea fusca looks a lot like it...and, for me, is a VERY stubborn bloomer.

What is the ugly winter season?

Your cinnamomifolia from TG is growing nicely...it is NOT a very generous bloomer, by the way....

Stay safe,

I'm curious too about the ugly winter season. I too have problems with my cinnamonfolia. Mine is down to two leaves on the darn thing. Repotted it and not much is happening. I'm afraid to take a cutting, cuz if I mess it up, no more cinnamomfolia for me! Good luck with all the ones budding. Sounds fantastic!

I have that plant from Logee's they sell as cinamomofolia, and am sure it is NOT that. I have 2 other cinnamomofolias that have MUCH larger leaves, and they are quite different in other respects. The one from Logees looks just like several I have that are H. pottsii. It is growing outside & climbing rampedly up a palm tree. It has lovely maroon colored leaves, but has not bloomed ever in 3 years time. Sorry!

Ugly winter season for us is daytime temperatures below 50, you can't go bare foot outside, even Texans have to wear a coat; you can't just run from your car to the store, etc. It will mean that the GH heater will have to run during the day light hours and I won't be able to leave the door open to the breeze. Yes, I know this sounds like a bunch of sissy whining.......

I saw some information about the so called small leafed H. cinnamomifolia in a copy of The Hoyan, with the discussion as I remember, it being doubtful that it was actually H. cinnamomifolia.. Will have to try to dig it up again. My problem is that I read it as I am falling asleep and never mark the page to go back to.

The leaves on mine also take on the maroon tones in heavy light.

I think we are going to have to find Dave something with more instant gratification.

Carol, have you ever bloomed H. cinnamomifolia?

Also, true to form, the H. globulosa is growing like a weed in these cooler temperatures. DH thought he saw a peduncle the other day. I told him to get real....we could probably make the cover of The Fraterna if it ever bloomed.

Wow, Susan ~ what a list of hoyas! Some of those, I've never even HEARD OF! Penta-whatta?! =0) And all those blooms on their way. Good job!! Oh, you make me green with envy.

My list of hoyas blooming:

Betsy, blooms on the way doesn't mean I'm going to see them bloom! They have a way of budding and then the buds FALL OFF!

Hopefull though as some of them are first blooms for me.

The Eriostemmas - maybe I am finally learning. I have them in the warmest, most sun beating down part of the greenhouse and I am watering ever so lightly. The leaves don't seem to go yellow and fall with a light weekly watering.

Susan....yes, I did get a bloom on my H. cinnamomifolia when it was about 2 years old....It is a difficult plant because the vines are so thick and if you don't get them in time to train, they do NOT want to bend. You will have your cinnamomifolia from TG...and he can play with that....I think of dave as being more of a H. naumanii kinda guy....or even megalaster.

The eriostemmmas can be so difficult...Super that you have psyched them out!!!
