Hi,
I am new here after spending a few months at GW and I am thrilled to have discovered this site. My winter project this year is to finally dig through junk drawers, jacket pockets, old clay pots in the shed, for plant tags and nursery receipts in hopes of putting together a record of plants in the yard. I hope to have a paper record (from Excel) as well as keep this info on line and the Journal/Diary options at Dave’s appear to be wonderful. If any of you more organized gardeners have any suggestions to offer I would appreciate your advice. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and through our shared experiences continue to grow as a gardener. Katy

Hi Katy,
I'm an "almost" newbie from MA, too. When you're done organizing your stuff, want to come over and organize mine??
:-) LoraB.
LoraB,
Thanks for the offer but my years of sloppy record keeping are a good clue that I wouldn't be a very good canidate. The plantfiles have made the process less painful but I have a long way to go. Is Billerica west of Boston? There are a number of almost newbies from MA. What is your gardening passion? Katy
I'd have to do some serious thinking on my passion.
It changes on a regular basis.
I'm hooked on daylilies now. A friend of mine was going to dig hers up and toss them in the trash heap. I rescued them and took them home. Then I made the mistake of looking on Ebay out of curiosity. I ended up buying different types IN JULY!! But they're hardy, so luckily they thrived.
I'm really getting into peonies too. I planted 2 that I bought at a fall clearance sale last year. Looking forward to seeing if they survive and actually bloom. I've got 2 other types of peonies that are getting really big and gorgeous. I'll need to move them in the fall though. They're in a bad spot now with not enough room to spead out.
Now that I've given you TOO much information... :-)
Where about is Edgartown?
LoraB.
LoraB,
It's a small gardening world I too have been passionate about daylilies this past year. For many years prior I would bring home a daylily here and there and throw it in my daylily bed. It wasn't long before I realized it was a big polka dot bed with clashing blossoms throughout most of the season. This past season as each one bloomed I carried the flower around with me and found what I thought were good companions. In this photo it shows how well 'Cherry Cheeks' companions with cone flowers. I don't want to bore you with my obsession so let me know if your interested in any of the other daylily companions I discovered. Of course I would love to hear more about what you have bought. Katy
Hi Katy.
I have just a few now. Condilla, Elvin King and a "wish I could remember that one's name" yellow. I've been planting them in a border along my driveway. I starting to think that that isn't such a good idea though.
To be honest, I don't have a plan for anything. The only real organized bed I have is one I started this past fall for cutting. Peonies, irises, tulips and daffodils. I've just today wintersowed some baby's breath to add to it later.
I'm not a real gardener. Just a wanna-be. :-) The flowers in your photo are just gorgeous. Do you plan your beds or just see an empty spot and start filling it up?
Here's a picture of my condilla daylily. I really hope it survives the winter.
LoraB.
LoraB,
LOL, I think most of my yard consists of plants from the family "wish I could remember that ones name". Your cutting bed sounds great the combination of Peony and Iris is one of my favorites and every year I try and remind my self to plant a bed maybe this will be the year. I love double daylilies and your Condilla has been added to my Lust List. I am a color focused gardener it has been difficult for me to consider any of the other elements of design as I am always seeking the thrill I can get from certain color combinations. As a result I often poorly site plants in my garden and then spend the next few years sharpening my shovel and moving my mistakes to another spot because the sage green and pale yellow... Ah well such is the art of gardening. Another daylily combination that I liked was the very late blooming Sandra Elizabeth which is bright yellow planted with Hydrangea 'Endless Summer' for extending the summer garden into the fall. I will look for more photo's. Katy
