Ha! I put my red lion amaryllis in my daughter's closet (because it was done blooming and the foliage all died down and away and it was cool in there) about 6 weeks ago. I checked on it today and it's putting up foliage again! It's out of the closet now, and hopefully, I'll get a flower in a couple of months! Finally, a plant that even I can't kill. LOL.
Hard to keep a good amaryllis down!
You are funny. I love the amaryllis because they are so pretty. I have several planted around the house and am waiting for more to bloom.
My 'La Paz' cybister is putting up lots of leaves and flower stalks, so I can't wait to see that one. It's growing slower than the other ones, but I kind of blame that on the number of gloomy days in succession that we've had. Low light levels! I'm babying an 'Apple Blossom' along that I got cheap at Walmart a few weeks ago and had already starting growing in the box. It's not doing so well, but I'm not giving up on it yet.
The 'closet' one is doing pretty well, actually. Just one leaf so far, but I imagine it will put up more soon.
I fell in love with the amaryllis this winter and plan to add to the ones I have next fall.
My Papilio, Rilona and Lady Jane are blooming. The second stalk on my Apple Blossom just started opening up its first bloom this morning. There's a total of 5. The first stalk also had 5 blooms. Not too shaby for a boxed bulb from Home Depot. My Royal Velvet will bloom by tomorrow and I can already tell it's going to be spectacular. I got that one out of a bin of oddball bulbs at a local florist for 3.00.
your papilios are stunning!
I'm so bummed. My Papilio started blooming on 1/16 and here it is 5 days later and it's all over. Are all the miniatures like this? All my other amaryllis last for 10 days. For 5 days, I'm not sure it's worth the bother.
Miniature? Mine wasn't miniature. And it lasted about 6-7 days. I think it makes a difference where you have it. The cooler the temperature, the longer it will last.
The picture below shows the second flower stalk that it put up. The first one finished about a week before this one started blooming.

beaker, I was told by Jon of Easy to Grow Bulbs that sometimes amaryllis react this way (stunted growth) with a change in environment, but they will be back to normal in a season. It doesn't happen to everyone but it does happen. It has happened to me with one variety (I can't remember which one, a red/white one).
Next year they should look like pic for Kbaumle. Don't give up on one of the most beautiful amaryllises around.
My mom's papilio, which was purchased at the same place as mine, was MUCH shorter than mine and hers didn't have nearly as large of blooms as mine either. The bulb was the same size, so maybe the environment was the difference in ours, too. She was disappointed, too, but I told her to hang in there and maybe it would be different next time it went into bloom.
I forgot about that until vossner's post.
I bought my Papilio from Van Engelen and it was in the miniature section. I have some other miniatures that still have a way to go before blooming, so I guess I'll see what happens with those. All the bulbs that I bought as miniatures are about half the size of a normal amaryllis bulb. Maybe they grow up to be big amaryllis someday (smile).
;-)
Mine came from Brent & Becky's.
