Upcoming Daffodil Shows around the United States
thanks, ladyrowan, for posting the Show information. Now we have no excuses for not entering a few of our finest!
I hope to see some photos of the entries come spring.
Have you ever entered? I have toyed with the idea but don't have enough confidence....
I have not entered. I've only been a serious gardener for about 2 years, and had a garden of my own for just over 6 months. Maybe in another year or so, when my daffodil collection gets a little bigger... :)
For the moment, my plan is to go to the Fortuna show in March, drool over Nancy and Jerry Wilson's daffodils (neighbors of my parents), take lots of pictures, and report back to the forum!
This is my first set of daffodils this year... they began blooming at Christmas! I think they got a little too warm early on, and decided to naturally force themselves.
"Omri"
Lori
From the looks of those, Lori, you can go ahead an enter. Very lovely!
Thank you, McGlory... unfortunately, that particular cultivar is done for the year. :) This year when I go to the show, I'm going to find out the particulars for how to enter in *next* years' competition.
Lori
ladyrowan, darius has a forum where she posts garden events, especially in the south. Maybe you should forward this to her in an e-mail so she can repost them.
I'll let her know, Woodspirit - thank you!
Lori
lori, I found this good article that talks about what to do if you are interested in learning more about what is involved in entering daffodils in shows.
This article is from the Western Pennsylvania Daffodil Society.
http://www.dhswp.org/pages/article6.html
A little bit of work, but entering might be fun.
And here's the American Daffodil Society's "Judging Criteria" for daffodils in shows. It's a little technical for me, but might be useful information for anyone thinking of entering this spring.

Good luck everbody!

Here's an article about grooming daffs for shows: http://users.erols.com/dlpub/daffodils/groom.htm
And here's yet another bit of research on how to exhibit daff collections (groups of five or more):

Hi, ladyrowan-- I was looking at all your new photo posts of daffodils for Plant Files and wondering how your garden was growing!?
From the looks of all the pretty blooms, I'd say you're doing awfully well and probably are entering some daffs in the shows this year?!
Thanks for all the new pics of daffs, btw, I've found them very helpful (and beautiful). t.
Hi, Tobasco.
My garden is doing great! I haven't taken any photos of the front of my house in a while, it has been raining almost non-stop for the past few weeks. This time last year, the daffodils in the area were already long done, but due to the long cold spring, they are still coming up! I may have blooms all the way to the end of April.
Unfortunately, none of the 'Show Daffodils' are from my garden. Perhaps in another year, maybe two. Life is too hectic at the moment. My neighbors did well at the show, though. I took photos of over 100 new varieties, some of which aren't listed on Plantfiles, so I'll have to do some research and list them first.
I also got pictures of the flower arrangements, which I'll post as soon as I've finished editing them.
I hope your garden is blooming too! Shouldn't you be getting Daffodils by now? Or is it still too cold in OH?
Lori
We have our 'early mid-season' daffs blooming! So bright and cheery against the grey sky.
Heard a little about your rainy weather. My DH and DD were up in Napa a couple of weeks ago and were rained out. Sister in San Diego has had hail three weeks in a row that knocked out her cactus garden. Very strange.
I have been practicing with my new camera taking pics of Daffs. Would enter them in PF if I could figure out how to do it. I do enjoy looking at all your entries, though. You are definitely in some fine daffodil country!
Our Daffodil Show is this Saturday, so I hope to have some good pics. I am a year or two away from entering too, I think.
Keep posting. I am lurking and admiring! t.
It is very easy to post to PlantFiles. Just find the cultivar you want to post a picture of, go to the bottom of the page, and click on the 'Upload an image of this plant' link, and follow the instructions.
My Grandmother lives in So Cal, and she said that they are just about to hit their season average, and the season is only about half over. Crazy! It was flooding last January when I went down for a visit, I'm heading south in two weeks, and it will probably be raining cats and dogs... again! As long as it doesn't rain on *Disneyland* day, we will be alright.
Good luck with your new camera! What kind did you get? Does it have any macro settings? Those are really great when photographing Daffodils up close.
Lori
The part about plant files I don't really 'get' is the 'family, genus, species' nomenclature and the 'common names' categories and where to insert the different daffodil divisions in the DG format. (I'm a little stupid on this).
I bought a Nikon Coolpix P2. I'll have to read the instruction book to find out where/how the Macro setting is before I go to the Daffodil Show tomorrow. I used Macro on my Canon digital for some daffodil shots but the wind was blowing and I was shaking and so 'really blurry' was the result. I need to get a tripod, I guess.
Good luck with your Disneyland Day. I will be in SF before too long to visit my DD and some friends. Hope the rain stops by then.

Lori
For those of you who are interested in visiting or entering the national daffodil show in Philly this month, here are pics from the 2005 convention in St. Louis-- this slide show may give you an idea for presenting your blooms...
http://community.webshots.com/album/321485922jaRfTT
We visited Blithewold Mansion and Gardens in Bristol, RI yesterday during Daffodil Days. The weather was a little overcast but the rain held off and we had a wonderful day! Daffodil Days is an event held each year at Blithewold for a 3 week period in April. What a lovely display of daffodils and spring flowering trees!!! Tens of thousands of daffodils of many varieties in bloom throughout the gardens. In addition to the daffodils and flowering trees, the greenhouse containing tender succulents, citrus plants, cuttings and seedlings was open to the public and very inviting. Also interesting were the rock and water gardens. Be sure to visit the giant sequoia on the property one of the largest in the Eastern US. Also note the cutting and vegetable gardens and large stand of bamboo.
After touring the gardens, we visited the mansion for a self guided tour. Helpful guides are there to answer questions and each room contains a detailed description of the history and furnishings of the room. Each room was decorated with lovely flower arrangements done by local florists. If you go during the week they serve tea in the Blithewold dining room.
Interesting fact one of the tour guides told me: They only have 3 full time garden staff. The gardens are maintained by many volunteers and there's a group that just goes around dead heading the plants and they call themselves the 'Deadheaders' (aptly named!)
If you can get there this week I'd highly recommend it!!!! Or save the idea for next spring. Well worth the $10 admission.
I've posted my photos below here:
http://www.picturetrail.com/gid9914104
Enjoy!
Question: There was a dainty yellow flower that looked like a small upside down tulip. Can anyone identify it (see photo album)?
Sue
Here is one photo from the photo album:
sedum--thanks for the wonderful slide show of great daffodil pics (and the succulents, too, btw!). It must have been a fun day out!
Your pic above is exactly how I want by back yard to look!
Tabasco - it was great fun going to Blithewold. I've wanted to go for many years and it is 1.5 hrs from where I live so we made it there this year.
So I am also intrigued by succulents. Can you believe I think I left out another 5 - 8 photos of succulents photos I took in that greenhouse. (Me wanting to spend more time in the greenhouse!). But since it was all about daffodils I tried to emphasize those in the photo album.
Sue
