Check out this new clone of imperialis from Asiatica Nursery. I wish there were better pictures of the flower, as it looks amazing close up. Something for all you eriostemma growers?

New H. imperilais clone
Isn't that the same imperialis that was up for a discussion on another forum?
Christina
Christina, I don't know, was it?
It could have been on a Swedish forum... Will have to check...
Christina
It is discussed on Ms. Burtons forum.
My guess is that it is a seedling...selfpollinated with a wierd genetic affect. And all viruses are not lethal...variegation is a virus of sorts. Every wierdness in a hoya is not automatically TMV or something equally as bothersome.
Looks like someone needs to get one of those and let us know how it goes! I think the flowers look beautiful. What is TMS?
Heather
TMV is Tobacco Mosaic Virus...and there are many different strains of it....
Hi! I was the one who started the discussion on HoyasRUs. Christine Burton also thinks it's a seedling, possibly by Michael Miyashiro. So I have e-mailed him to see if he has any information. No answer yet.
Fia
Hello again! I just received this answer from Michael Miyashiro:
"In 1980 I had a batch of seedlings of imperialis rauschii crossed with self and had several seedlings that were dispersed all around. i haven't seen any that became well known and assumed that were all lost.
I personally am not aware of a mottled viral or other form of imperialis. There was an imperialis from Borneo I believe that had huge leaves but never flowered for me. this was known for a while as imperialis Gigantea or large leafed form."
So I guess the only way to find out what Hoya imperialis 'Mosaic' is, is to order it and wait for it to bloom.

Thanks, Fia, and welcome to the forum! It's always great to have people around who seek out and share information. BTW, your english seems perfect, did you grow up with it?

Wow, went to asiatica to see the flower, it is different. Purdy too
Hi Mark! Oh no, English is not my first language. But we start with English classes when we are 9 years old (at least we did when I went to school). And also watching a lot of english/american TV-shows helps too... Usually we understand you perfectly, but sometimes it's harder to get everything right when we speak or write.
By the way, did you like the picture of Hoya imperialis 'Mosaic' on Asiatica Nursery?

Fia, I did. I don't usually care for variagation in any kind of plant, (there are a few gold-spotted abutilon leaves I like) and I don't generally like mottled flowers either, but that 'Mosaic' does look beautiful. You can't really tell from the photo, but it looks like the flower COULD be slightly distorted in shape. The outline looks just a little bit off. If so, I wouldn't care for it, but if the flower structure seems normal I'd say it's a real find.
I don't grow eriostemmas myself, maybe someone else could get one and report back?
Mark
Just looked it up. $26 bucks for a plant they have had for 2 years on their catalogue seems a bit stiff!!! Not a bit stiff...outrageous! I hear their shipping is high too.
Carol
Hi! I think the date on their website is wrong. I have visited their website before, and I am pretty sure Hoya imperialis 'Mosaic' wasn't there a while ago. /Fia
Hi Fia!
I have also visited their website quite often, and the spring of 2005 they had H. imperialis 'Mosaic' as a new species´. Before that I am pretty sure that they did not have it for sale. :)
I have checked with them about shipping cost and so, and it is very expensive :( But I´ll think I am going to order it anyway it is so beautiful!
/Marie
Maybe we need to start co-owning hoya like dog fanciers do to be able to afford a very expensive show dog!
Wow - that's a DIFFERENT LOOKING HOYA!
Susan - I like your "co owning" idea.......so why don't you all send me your money and I'll order one and be it's surrogate Mom. I promise I'll send you pictures every year! Might even arrange weekend visits.
=0)
I just ran across this thread so i dont know if anyone ever had this plant to bloom for them or not or if it was ever brought back up for further discussion.
I have this plant but havent seen it bloom yet. I received it in a trade a little over a month ago and was told by the person from whom I got it that is was purchased originally by them from Asiatica so it is the same one that they offer for sale.
I also didnt realise that the imperialis bunch were eriostemmas. I have H. imperialis as well and it grows like a weed for me. It was also received in a trade last year and had a peduncle on it when I got it but it never formed and buds.
dmichael
Actually...H. imperialis isn't an Eriostemma...just grows like one!!!
I purchased 2 of these from Asiatica in April and I am the one who traded with dmichael so with some luck one of ours will bloom next year. I paid nearly $80 for 2 plants and shipping. My 'mosaic' plants are VERY slow growing while the other imperialis I have grows like a weed. I have noticed some new growth at the base of one plant since I started using the beer formula. If anyone has any helpful info POST IT! Thanks and God bless. -joanne
Keep the imperialis in the warmest spot you have with good indirect light. Warmth is the key...and, of course, air flow.
Thanks Carol. You gave me the same advice on the Eriostemmas I have and I put the 'mosaic' on the same heating pad. I since have given 'ruthie' and 'optimistic' to another forum member but am still trying to keep this one alive. I need to add a fan. Thanks again, -joanne
