Gotta have a magnolia tree. Recommend one for S. TX?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

I live in Magnolia, TX. So NATURALLY, I MUST have a magnolia tree(s).

Anyone have any tips or recommend specific cultivar?

That is one cute picture, what is that sweetheart's name?

As for the magnolia, there is the Southern Magnolia,Magnolia grandiflora a beautiful evergreen tree with gorgeous scented white flowers.

Tuilp Magnolia, Magnolia soulungiana, a lovely small deciduos tree with pink flowers.

Or you could have both, you would not regret it.

There are many Southern Magnolia cultivars. Some are shorter than the native. Others bloom sooner. The native Southern Magnolia can get between 60 to 90 feet. The information on the University of Georgia Extension link is 15 years old. I'm sure there are more cultivars than the ones listed, but it will give you an idea of what's available.

If you are interested in Magnolias other than the Southern Magnolia, the Clemson University link has cultural information as well as lists of other Magnolias.

This last link, to the Magnolia Society, has a more current list of Magnolia cultivars as well as descriptions.

I had a Cucumber Magnolia in my old yard. The flowers were not as conspicuous as the Southern Magnolia's, but the seed pods made up for it. I also had a Galaxy Magnolia I hated to leave behind. The beautiful blooms brightened the yard so. The flowers start out a dark purple. It is a one stemmed tree as opposed to many other decidious cultivars and hybrids that tend to sucker at the base.

Wow! Thanks for all the info. I've heard they are fragrant too. That's always a plus!!!!

The cutie in the picture above is Cricket. She's a Shih Tzu. If you have a Dogs Page-a-Day calendar, she (along with another of my dogs) is March 5th! :o)

Cricket is really adorable, my daughter had one of those dogs and they are very sweet.

Thanks! It's an adorable breed! Cricket waves with both paws when she wants someone, or even on command. She's quite a hit in traffic, and waves especially at the truck drivers since they are so high up and she can see their faces.

You can get one for yourself by going to www.petfinder.com. It's a national search for animals (dogs, cats, horses, birds, etc.) by zip code, breed, even age, gender, etc. AWESOME site!!!!!!!!!

Here's her papa's favorite picture (same as little pic above):

Thank you for the link and the picture, but we just can't have any other pet besides our Siamese cat Angel, she just would not allow it, very protective of her home, and would be very unhappy.
She is a wonderful pet too, here is her picture.

She's GORGEOUS! I know abou the Siamese temperament. If I weren't allergic, I'd have a Siamese too!

Well, just remember to tell everyone about www.petfinder.com. I do! (as you can tell) ;o)

Have you posted her pic in the pets forum?

Yes, I did that some time ago, and everybody loved her.

Ladyborg, what bred is your cute buddy?

They are Shih Tzus. The cuddliest, most clownish dogs you ever saw!!!!! Go to www.petfinder.com to get your very own.

The sticker on my car says "My Shih Tzu is smarter than your honor student". I get lots of smiles at that, and even seen someone take a picture with their cell phone in traffic.

I have a Little Gem Magnolia in the front yard. Its smaller than the Southern (Little Gem gets around 40 feet ....Southern ...80 feet). I have been thrilled with it. It was very quick to bloom and has blooms just about year around (it has two blooms now) and also grows pretty quick for the first 5-10 years then the growth slows down.

Hope the info helps.
