I just got done repotting all of my av's into new lighter soil and with wicks. It was a lot of work and I don't have that many plants. The worst part was shaking off all of the old nasty dirt from the store bought mix. I used the suggested 1/3 perlite, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 peat but I could only find spagnum moss so I used that instead of the peat. The mix was so light and it made the repotting a lot easier. I switched them to wicks because I want to start getting a few more plants and I don't want hours of work everyday.
I still just can't believe how much work it was to repot off of these guys. I had one of them that had roots that were over a foot long. All of that in the old, not too airy, mix. I can't wait to see what happens in this new mix!
new potting soil
Yup..this can take a lot of time ;)
I tend to do mine a few at a time on a rotation every 6 months or so.
If I didn't it would take me days!
my favoriote bought mix is Lamberts potting mix....i ad vermicullite and perlite to it...it is very light....it can be purchased at home depot...buy the bigger side to save money..much cheaper....same with the vermiculte and perlite...they have big bags at HD...think under 10.00
HUbby gets me the big bags at HD too Bob ! Good prices !
I bought everything at Meijer, I'm going to have to go to home depot next time though. The amount that the 3 bags made should last me for quite a while. As I said I don't have many av's so even just the one bag that I bought has lasted about a year. Hopefully I'll be changing that soon. :)
MY HD doesn't have vermiculite but I do muy Lamberts..I LOVE it.
I buy my Vermiculite at Busy Bee....
I also get my peat moss there as they have the larger size
