I lost one of my mares yesterday. Persona had been part of my little herd for 20 yrs or so. Aside from the usual arthritic stiffness, she was fine when I went out to feed the horses in the morning. By the time I went to bring them out to the pasture a couple of hours later, Persona had somehow managed to break her leg right where it joined her body. I hoped all day that it would turn out to be a bad sprain, but I knew there was a strong probability it would be a fatal injury. I called a local grave digger to be on call in case I needed his services. When Paul arrived around 5:30 yesterday afternoon, it took him all of about 10 seconds to confirm the worst. I told Persona it was time for her to go be with the other half of my herd on the other side and stayed with her until she was gone.
The grave digger just arrived (an hour early), so I have to go move the other horses and clear a path for Persona's removal.
Goodbye, old girl. Don't chase the dogs and Abbie Goat when you meet up with them.
