H. waymaniae - I'm a little pumpkin, yes I am

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

I just read on this website http://members.tripod.com/asia_flora/hoyas__iv.htm that H. waymaniae lose their bloom peduncles after blooming.
Has anybody else found this to be true?
Also, any special care besides keeping it on the drier side (what does that mean? Should it be allowed to dry out a little like a caudata?)?

One reason I am asking is because (I am sorry if I am making all you non-west coast freezing-your-hides-off folks jealous) I just got a shipment from the Hoya Pimpette (you all know who she is) and I am SQUEALING while performing the HAPPY DANCE non-stop! Lemme list what I got: BS-1, Diversifolia aka H. excavata, Imperialis, a rooted sp. Tanna Island (fingers crossed since I have killed off two previous cuttings), and waymaniae. Yippie skippy I'm a little piggy. On that note, any special advice for any of these plants?

1) Waymaniae does NOT loose its peduncles after blooming. Mine has only one and it has bloomed 3 times from it.
2) Don't let sp. Tanna get too much sun and don't let it dry out.
3) Imperialis might look like it, but it actually doesn't like to dry out.

Great hoyas from the HP!

Definitely a great score. I love the leaves on the waymaniae. I'm on my second one. I killed one this summer along with a tanna. Part of my boiler method hoya growing!! Don't try this one at home folks, lol!

Yep I am a waymaniae killer myself. I tried two of them and they both croaked... So did my sisters. They are pretty picky. So I quite wasting my money on that one. Haven't tried tanna but I have a trade of Imperialis comming this spring that I am anxious to receive. Good luck Ann

I had a huge H. waymaniae...it hung outside in the shade and the rain. It seemed to really like it and it bloomed and grew like crazy. Then suddenly it started to rot along the stems, of all places. So...I cut it up and now grow it a LOT drier. The more light/sun it gets the redder the leaves get too.

Anyone have a photo of the *leaves* of H. waymaniae....Oh...I know where to go and look, (!)

Is your photo above of waymaniae, Christina?

Ann - ROTFLMAO!!!! I think all of us "freezing our hides off" people can hear you squealing - even through the ice!! And, gotta love that dance, right? Hoya pimpette - too funny! Yippee skippy, indeed - nice score!!! Karen

Thank you, Christina!

Oh, I like that (both leaves *and* blooms).....I can see why you're excited, Ann!!

Christina - your pictures are INCREDIBLE! Please post often, it is so inspiring to see your plants and pics!! Karen

Karen, while I have calmed down I still catch my feet doing the two-step while I'm not looking...(lol) Meanwhile, my bella just gave up on me. This stinks. It is such a picky plant for me (I don't know why, everyone else seems to do well with it, but bella is not my friend), so I will give it the send-off it deserves - a long pitch into the trash can.

I saw Christina's photo and thought...HEY, mine isn't shiney...it is quite dull....but look at the photo. Darn flash. The second photo is more what it looks like. Christinas' and mine are a bit different which is usual.

This is more like it....it is growing now in the shade...so no redness in it.

Ya that's the ticket, mine looks like Carol's second picture. I really love the leaves on it. I just put mine under my HPS lamp to bring out the color. I'll post once you can see the difference.

Oh my - I stiiiiill have leaf envy from you all! Christine - do you really take all those pictures yourself? If so - not only do you grow great hoyas, you got a flare with the camera, too!! I love it when you post pictures!!

Mine look more like Carols at this time in the house. However, when grown in more sun, they get quite red. I have a picture somewhere of mine when it was REAL red right after I got it from Mel. They are also HARD feeling. It almost feels like a fake plant. Ha. Mine has never bloomed for me though. The other plant that has the "hard" feeling leaves is H. kanyakkumariana. I just love that little plant.

Yes Betsy, I'm the one behind the camera all the time and I'm enjoying every minute of it!

Christina....your photo is SO good, one can see the little hairs on the leaves!!!

Did you get my photos?

Carol

Yes Carol, just saved them. BUT, they don't hold for print bigger than about 1.5 x 2.5 inch... Do you have the original photos?

Christina

I love these leaves!! It is amazing what they do in the different light conditions. How Cool!!!

Long Beach, CA

Ok...I found the pic I had of it when I first got it and it was VERY red. Later it actually changed back to dark green while in the house in lower light.

Marcy, great photo. Everything about this hoya seems like Halloween!

Marcy, what kind of light was that in to get the leaves that red?

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Ann, H. bella is not my friend either. I still have a variegated which is hanging in there. The leaves are beautiful, but it's a booger to keep alive..

Long Beach, CA

Ann....that was like that when I got it from Mel. I am not sure where it had been, but I know it was in very high light to get that red. However, it has never been that red since. Ha. When I put it in sun, it burned, so I brought it back in. I have since rooted the longer stems from it, and they & the original have not grown much since.

I also had trouble with H. bella UNTIL I started keeping them sitting in water (after reading that on another forum). l don't drown them, but I leave water in the dish under them most of the time. (much like some people keep African violets). I also have one in a self watering pot that wicks water up into the soil from an under-pot water storage. They seem to want constant but even moisture in the soil.
Have had no trouble with them since doing it that way. This includes the "wee bellas" as well. I have them in a plastic glass that has holes burned in the bottom & the mix is about half perlite. Then it sits inside a cup that always has about an inch of water in it. They grow like mad. Ha..go figure!

Marcy - what a good idea about the violet pot. Think I'll try my bella in that also. Thanks for the good tip!! Karen

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Thanks for that tip Marcy!! Maybe I'll give one another try.
