Picked this up yesterday at Menards. Had NO IDEA what it was but the label said "Kactus Korral" and just said SUCCULENT. I posted a pic this morning on the Cactus & Succulent forum and got a reply saying it looks like a Dischidia. =0)
Gonna post another picture here to double verify and if it iiiis - YOU'LL HEAR ME SQUEALING WITH DELIGHT CLLEEEEAR TO WHERE YOU ARE!
p.s. Note in the middle of the plant there is a very large, swollen "Lima Bean" lookin' thing. What IS that?!
thanks!!
Dischidia??
(It's a Dischidia)
What? You donna believe me?! (lol!!!)
Glad you got a 'coveted' plant!
I could describe that swollen growth/leaf....but you'd be better off to google it!
Betsy start "SQUEALING WITH DELIGHT", it looks like Dischidia pectenoides to me.
Blessings,
Awanda
Yepsy Betsy...that's D. vidalia (Hort.)...the 'Hort' meaning that it is known as such in horticulture but perhaps not published or not published as such. It is my very favorite...well, one of them. Grow it is strong light, and warm...not too wet. Mine blooms constantly with tiny magenta flowers...and it produces seed pods readily. Ted Green thinks they are self fertilizing .... if you notice 'downy' or fluffy stuff, they are seeds pods....and they germinate readily if you put them between damp paper towels.
Mine hangs in the top of my greenhouse and I give it water only when it is dry.
Hope this helps.
Carol
Edited to correct spelling: it is D. vidalii (VIDALII)...ha, vidalia is the name of an Onion...!

HAHAHA! Yeeees, Nan - I BELIEVED YOU....just needed to hear it on the on HOYA forum! ROTF! =0) hahahaha I can't stop laughing!!
WHOOOOO HEEEEEEEE!!!! Can ya'll hear me squealin with delight?!?!
And at a Menards no less!!! It was a GREAT plant day yesterday because I also scored three awesome Rhipsalis!
A DISCHIDIA!! I HAVE A DISCHIDIA!!!!!!!!
GREAT find, sis!!! What a good plant day you had yesterday!!!
ANT HOTEL!??!?!?!? Whaaaat?! I don't want no AAAANTS.
Are you serious?! When it hatches, there will be ANTS in it??? Ah maaaan, I have the heebie jeeeeebies now!
ANYBODY WANT A FREE PLANT?!?!?!?!?!
(nooot)
I usually don't like teeny tiny plants...but Dischidia seem different...they are BIG small plants...mostly liking to grow a bit drier than most...but some love lots of water.
NAH...they just puff up...not to worry. Your is a 'Just Say No to Ants' house, I assume?
LOL!! Just had to 'razz you!
I can hear you too!!!
The wind must be coming from the south.....which reminds me.....I need to go 'plant shopping'.....if *you* found D's and R's.....mebbe I will!!
lol!!
No worries....they'll house ants (it's a symbiotic relationship) in their natural habitat.
Betsy's home in IL isn't it's native habitat!
Betsy...I was looking closely...I think you have some seedpods ripening...they are long and skinny and often in groups. If you put a teenytiny piece of scotch tape around them (one) the pod will mature and not burst open.
Phew! Thanks Carol - - I was gonna give this thing to my Sis if it was gonna hatch critters. Unfortunately, no - my house is NOT a "Just Say No To Ants" house ~~~ every spring those teeny tiny little ants we call "Sweet Ants" come snooping around my kitchen. HATE the little buggers! But only cuz they are such a nuisance. It's SPIDERS that I absolutely canNOT deal with. I'd rather sleep in a pit of SNAKES as to have a spider crawl on me!
YIIIKES! And thanks for the growing tips.
Nan - heck yeah - go check out the stores! I hit pay dirt yesterday!! Seriously...as I was checking out the sales lady said "Oh - more plants. Everybody was hoping we were DONE with plants for a while and then THIS shipment came in today." So I must've hit it just when the skid of plants went to the floor.
Sing with me now...."Oh Happy Daaay.....
Oh HAPPY DAAAAY..."
(when Jesus waaalked - when Jesus walked....) =0)
You go girl!! What an awesome score!! Maybe I better go plant shopping today! All of the sudden, I feel so inspired to shop, ha ha!
Heather
Carol - I dunno ...I just went over and carefully picked through the plant...from what you described, I'm looking for some little 'string bean' lookin' things? I don't see any. I see what looks like some 'aerial roots' coming from the leaf nodes.....and some pedicules (is that what it's called - the stem where the peduncle/flower grows from?)
The picture I posted isn't all that clear, though, is it?
Yes, Betsy, I think you SHOULD give it to your sister - ants are aweful, and she lives on a farm, so she can handle more critters. I'm sure, out of the generousity of her heart, she'll adopt your plant. Signed, not Betsy's sister
Christina:
AWESOME pictures! WOW!!! Thank you for sharing! I'd been sitting here wondering what a Dischidia looks like in bloom.....now I know! =0)
So those long, thin, little finger-like thingies sticking out are the seed pods? Hmmm... I don't see any of those on mine. But tell me again....what is that big swollen "lima bean" thingie? And what's its purpose and what will it DO? (please don't tell me ants will come pouring out..)
And KAREN - - I know that's you.....I KNOW IT IS!
Wow, it really does have some seed pods on it. Different looking. Nice find Betsy.
The seed pods come after the flowers start to wilt... At least they did on my plant. Over and over again. The big swollen thing is where the ants live in the wild. In other words: an ants nest. The ones on my plant ended up having mealie bugs IN them and I had a hard time fighting them. I even took some ants from the garden and tried to get them to like it on my plant. (Kept the pot in a big glass jar so the ants couldn't escape.) The ants didn't like my plant and I ended up cutting the bags off and the plant died...
It's a fun plant to grow, but I got the feeling it didn't like being too wet.
Christina
lol...Betsy...you have 'ant-paranoia, now, dontcha?!
The 'inflated' leaves *are*, as Christina pointed out, ant-nests (in wild/native habitat.)
The ants carry food into the (leaf) nest, and the food also benefits the plant....hence the 'symbiotic' relationship.
If you're yearning for more technical information, try a Google search on 'ant plants'. You'll find Dischidias among other plants...it's pretty interesting!
Dischidias are definitely epiphytic plants and will rot if kept wet.
Betsy, you are tooooo funny!!I had not laughed today until I read this post. I can just imagine this wild and exhuberant person filled with excitement. You are that way in person, right? Or would I meet a quiet and unassuming Betsy? Not!
Don't go anywhere, we need you girl...
Susan
Quiet and unassuming? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
NOT, I assume?
Why yes, ladies......of course, I'm quiet and unassuming. THAT'S LITTLE OL' ME!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAAH ROTFLMBO!!!
(shutup sis)
BTW ~~Thanks to you all for your help on ID'ing my new "coveted plant"! I still can't believe I made such a great score. And, like i said earlier, I also scored three awesome Rhipsalises. So indeed, it was a great plant day.
Besides the seedpods.....what's the best way to take cuttings off a Dischidia? Cuz ya see, I got this sister...............
=O)
Great find, I love nice surprises.
Christine, if you would like to share a seed pod, I would love to try germinating it.
