After an 18hr soak!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Am I dreaming? I went to get the seeds that I set out to soak yesterday afternoon.. Check this out! Am I right here? Is this a sprout or did something or someone pull a dirty trick on me?

PS. This is Hawaiian Double White x L'Amour from SeedSproutNursery

It's definitely sprouting! You just might have a double pink! What a treasure! Did you plant it yet?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

No, I haven't planted it yet. I just found it a few minutes ago! I would think I should put it straight to the potting soil.. right? Any input is sure appreciated.. I don't wanna mess up.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It must have been very fresh! They germinate right away! Good for you!

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes plant it straight in the soil. Barely cover it and firm the soil just a little bit. White tail down of course :) Water it gently. Be careful to not keep the seedling to wet. Better on the dry side than too wet. This is so exciting! I just know it will be something special!

Thank you so much Vee8ch.. NOW I'm really excited.. I SOOO appreciate the details, I am too excited to think straight..

Kell, You know what? The pkg says "Collected June 05" I am shocked.. I didn't expect anything for week or so after they are in rockwool at least! I thought it was some kind of mushroom cling-on trying to get my seeds! LOL

I put the seeds in H202 water w/drop of Superthrive. I put the water cups on my stove where it is warm from the pilot light... not hot to the touch, just where it is not cold...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That must be the trick!! I will have to try it. I just started using that Superthrive again. I had always thought it was a hype but so many love it I thought I would try it once more!

I have a EDW X L'A blooming right now. I am hoping the second gereration will be pink. I had many seedlings of EDW X L'A bloom last summer. All were double whites. Hopefully I have crossed some well to get a pink double next.

This is a huge huge flower.

There is nothing more refreshing than the excitement of a first time seedling parent. Very contagious! There are too many of us old poot heads that have forgotten the wonders of it all! ZZ your excitement is wonderful! Think pink! :) Makes me want to plant a gabillion seeds! Funny about the mushroom ... lol!
Kell that's such a pretty flower just as it is. I hope your next generation brings you a really pretty pink.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Kell, that is ANOTHER awesome picture! I just melt when I see your pictures.. That "salt water taffy" looking shine and smoothness is so yummy. So is this the second generation for them? Okay then, I wish for your brugs to give you pink. :)

Vee8ch I'm so glad to give anyone a little excitement.. I wish I could give this feeling to the whole world..
A few months ago, I was tired, depressed, and felt so old.. Wow.. Look out now, I have come to life and I'm happier than I've been in years!

THANK YOU DG.. THANK YOU ALL

Oh Joyce, I am so glad you found us. Funny just a few minutes earlier I was dmailing another member here talking about how gardening is therapy. You can work out lots of issues and be rewarded with great beauty! I find it always gives me something to look forward to and share. Wait till spring, you won't believe the how your spirits will soar! LOL

In fact I just bought a bareroot rose called Soaring Spirits. What a great name for a plant that will soar come spring!

How appropriate is that! What a Yummy color! Pink & Yellow together just make me float away. Thank you so much Kell... I'm afraid if my spirit soars much more than this.. I'll be a total nut case worse than I already am!

Love the excitement of starting seeds. ZZ, the first shoot out is the root, that's why Vicki said 'plant it white tail down'. I have been known to plant them upside down, I know not to do that now. When in doubt, I lay them sideways and let nature take care of directions.

Kell, I have 1 of your EDW x LA. It got it's first bud in November, but it fell off when I moved it to the gh. Can't wait for it to take off this spring. We are having the mildest January I can remember, I didn't even wear a jacket when I went out this a.m.

Love your rose, wish I could grow them. I just don't have enough sun or the space.

Corte Madera, CA

seed starting is so much fun! woo-hoo! congrats on that eager to start brug!

=)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Linda, everyone of them was a double white. I had a row of double white down at the plots all growing the ground. They were in constant flower. I am thinking with L'A as a parent you can go pink or orangey.

I had one at home grow in pots and it is the only one that got huge! The flowers are huge too. Isn't that odd? I am only crossing the one at home and unfortunately, the hoophouse fell on it when it collapsed and broke off the limbs with mostof the pods. But that was OK, my double pink fell over too in the accident but landed on another brug and no pods were lost.

It has been so spring like here. Just crisp but nice.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

EDW is a cross of Species and Ecuador Pink. Maybe your chances of pink will be better than the chance of orange.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks Vicki, that information was missing on a spreadsheet that I keep. I have H Dale Greer, is that correct?

Kell, I'll settle for a nice double white, but if it's pink -- woo hoo!! I'll keep an eye on it this spring and let you know what it does.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes that is correct. 1998 or early 1999 is when he first shared his pic of his new baby with Rich Sanders and me. He originally called it Big White. We drooled all over the place lol!

edited: To our knowledge this is the very first "made in the USA" double.

Wow, that is really impressive! Good for you! Exciting, huh? LOL
Donna
p.s.
we are neighbors. :~)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Donna! We ARE Neighbors! Thank you.. I think it was a magic seed.. LOL

I peeled some of the others just a little.. On one, I uncovered this little embryo of a set of leaves. It was the cutest thing.. I took a picture of it, but it was so white, you can't see the little leaves all curled up against the white of the seed.. It's also planted in soil since it was starting to sprout too.

Wow.. good info here.. I'm glad I started this.. I am so thirsty for Brug knowledge. :)

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Joyce... I'm glad you started the thread also.. A few weeks ago I got the same package of the double hawaiian x l'Amoure.. good choice... I was going to wait a few weeks to start it... but with such success as you've had ... perhaps I should get mine going right away.. Thanks...
Kell... I got soaring spirits last spring.. part of the monies go to the victems of the 9-11 Trade tower disaster... it was gorowing without flowering all summer ... it started in September ..and come 9-11 it had burst into bloom... I don't know if it is a late season bloomer or just here for me.. let me know when it blooms.. after it was a good flowering rose.. well into the cold of fall here
I was watching the attack from my roof.. after the first one hit ..which I could feel in my bathtub..then saw it on TV and ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''I went up to the roof... hoisted my big flag and watched them burn... black smoke blowing out over the harbor and the Statue of Liberty... with millions of silver sparkles in the black smoke... then it occoured to me what I was looking at... after thinking they were the soals or spirits heading heavenward.. it came to me .. that they were millions of 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper sucked up unburned in the updraft of the fire...from thousands of copy machines... bright white sheets .. reflecting... sparkleing in the sun of the clear bright day.. then their collapse...
Good luck with yours... Gordon

Thank you Gordon, Hey.. Those seeds are biggies huh? I have high hopes for them.. be sure to keep us posted on how yours do.. this will be fun.

Wow.. Awesome story, Awesome rose!

Mc Call Creek, MS

What an awesome story, Gordon! I worked in one of the trade towers for three days. I stood at the window and took pictures of the Statue of Liberty one of those days. It still is all so unbelieveable to me.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Joyce... sure ..I'll let you know how they do... you have a bit of a head start on me... lets see who get a flower first... HA HA HA ... I'll give you a two week head start... In the most good natured of contests.. we'll both be winners... no doubt about it ... here's loking for double pinks all around...
Gaylams... yes ...it still borders on the surreal.. to come up aganst the thin thread which holds polite society and udder chaos apart is scarey everytime..
Oh Kell... I was reading another offer for the Soaring Spirits.. and I was reminded ...
1.... that it commemrated ALL thoes lost on 9-11... I had no intention of slighting those in PA and Washington... for sure ... Just this was so close to home.. I'd forgoten..
and 2...that it was a climber... funny thing ... mine never showed and tendency to being a climber .. usually a climber will have a long shoot...that takes off and goes... but this one I had ... just sat as a little bush all summer and through the flowering... let me know if yours climbs at all...
Well I was looking through to find a picture of it with some brugs.. I finally found one on an old CD.. back before the digital cameras.. who can remember that far back... lets see if I can get it off the machine and posted here ... Gordon

Gordon... HA HA HA You'd have to give me more than 2 weeks!! I didn't even know what brugs were 4 months ago, other than the one I saw at HD when it made me weak in the knees.. LOL All I knew then was a pink/peach colored Angel's Trumpet was the pretties thing I had ever seen! If I knew then, what I know now.. I probably wouldn't have batted an eyelash at the $49. price tag.
I've been gardening for years.. I spent one year addicted to terrariums.. and I've grown some roses from seed.. but I've never started a brug seed till now.
Thankz to hours and hours of reading here, I'm learning, but I have a LONG way to go.. I have nice leaves on 4 cuttings, and an awesome lil Maya I bought from SeedSprout.. but I've never had a bloom, or even seedling yet..

That is an awesome photo... THAT was your view? Wow.

The more I hear about that darling rose, the more I want one!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

We will all love to keep track of your friendly competition! LOL. So keep us all posted.

Amazing that your Soaring Spirits waited till 9/11 to bloom, Gordon. What a personal story of 9/11. I bet it has really left a mark on your life. I did know that some of the money will be donated to such a great cause.

With climbers, there is a saying which of course I can't remember, but it essentially says that the 1st year they sit there, and the second is not much more but then the 3rd they leap into growth. I have found this to true. I have a 4th of July that has sat there for 2 years with little upward growth, and this year I have high hopes it will finally climb up over the arbor. 4th of July is a parent to Soaring Spirits.

Did any of your blooms have more pink in them? The promotional pictures they release of new hybrids usually are way too flattering. They make it hard to judge their colors accurately, sight unseen.

I am going to intertwine Night Owl together with Soaring Spirits over an arbor. Though I do hesitate a bit, worried my gaud lust might be in overdirve here. LOL

All I need is a deep deep purple tree brug to stand next to this arbor! Can you imagine that?

Okay then Kell... would you be my coach? I need a competitive edge here ya know..

I am such a sucker for the color of those roses, personally I think your arbor going to be awesome. Gawd is good..

LOL Yeah.. Purple.. a real dark one..

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Only if you promise to share the spoils. LOL

I just would hate for it to turn to gaud-awful! LOL
