How to Address your Envelopes

Springfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I've been noticing a lot of my mail has unnecessary punctuation and spelled out states so I thought the following links might help. Simply an FYI.

According to the United States Post Office, your package will arrive more efficiently when addressed without punctuation - except for a hyphen between the zip code and the +4 code. AND that adding that plus 4 code speeds up delivery and you can look this code up on the internet although NOT everyone has a + 4 code yet.

Spelled out states? Punctuation?

My gosh! It's the end of grammar for us! The children everywhere will be celebrating as they'll no longer be teaching punctuation in schools!!!

What a crock!

Violet,I don't have a 4 code let alone a hyphen'''Sis'

Nor do I ..generally that only applies to a post office box. I have seen no problems from any mail I have recieved from anyone at Dg or elsewhere. I have a home address and a post office box.

More on +4 codes.

This is primarily for urban or more densely populated areas. If you live in a small town, you probably won't have one.

Why are ZIP+4 codes used?

In 1983, the Postal Service began using an expanded ZIP Code called "ZIP+4." A ZIP+4 code consists of the original 5-digit ZIP Code plus a 4-digit add-on code. The 4-digit add-on number identifies a geographic segment within the 5-digit delivery area, such as a city block, office building, individual high-volume receiver of mail, or any other unit that would aid efficient mail sorting and delivery.

Use of the 4-digit add-on is not mandatory, but it helps the Postal Service direct mail more efficiently and accurately because it reduces handling and significantly decreases the potential for human error and possibility of misdelivery. It also will lead to better control over USPS costs and, in turn, postage rate stability.

PO's can't live them ,can't live without them.
Just found out today the postal rates have gone up,this added about six bucks to my mailings today. Bah Humbug
Plus they still mishandle, abbuse, and distory it before you get it. Mike

Let's Get Real. At least it sounds like you receive your mail. Did you receive my package of seeds that you wanted for sase. I never did hear from you. Now let's talk about ettiquette. I don't mind helping someone out, but when they e-mail about everyone on a board and post for sase on several seed sites. Then turn around and trade away seeds that they just requested for sase on another site. At least they can let the person now they received the seeds and a simple Thank You, to be courteous. This seems to me to be far more worthwhile than posting this on all the seed trading websites. Debby

I'm more concerned with seeds being packaged right than doing exactly what the PO wants. I have delivered mail that was so far off, no number, no zip, all kinds of bad combinations. Just write the addy like the trader gives it to you.
I've gotten seeds lately that were completely loose in the envelope, I've gotten 3 trades this week that didn't have the kind of seed or a return addy that I could even check.
Let's just do the best we can on the envelope. I do try, I don't want someone coming back and telling me that they didn't get my seeds. But it's just as important to mark what's inside.
love ya:)

Easy, easy, easy...everyone. The PO is gonna do their thing no matter what we do. You can wrap it up in red ribbon if you want, and if someone is having a bad day, who knows what can happen. Relax, take it in stride....we're all human here, and as the saying goes, " Tis Human to Err.....To Forgive is Devine."
Let's all try to be a little more benevolent to one another and the world.

I can see what you mean though Violet..
cause I do have a 4 digit add-on to my zip code.. and rarely use it.. but may begin to use it more if it will help my packages an mail to get to me better..

living out in the country like I do.. sometimes things just don't make it. Thankfully all the seeds an such that I get through DG are good and packaged well... and seem to arrive fine :)..
