saw neem oil at lowes today 1 pint for 12.00...is that a good price?
neem oil
I'm not sure I've never used it. But if it is I'll have hubby get me some :)) Allison
i think neem is very good....i saw it advertised at mail order/internet sites..but with the delivery charge..i think it's more expensive than buying it locally....there's one called ORGANICIZE..here that is organic and works well on just about everything..and than Bayer came out with that liquid..think called Bayer All Purpose...where you put tbsspoon in gallon water and it both feeds and acts as systemic..on virtually everything.
JungleBob:
If you can, try to buy the pure neem oil. I have to buy it via internet because the stores only carry greenlight brand, which isn't produced the same way and may contain impurities. I use pure neem oil because of its safety since I have kids and dogs. I always use Dyna Grow and buy from www.wormsway.com. You can also buy it from John at Cape Cod Violetry, which has the cheapest shipping I've ever encountered. I've done a lot of research on neem oil and cannot believe how amazing it is. I love it and use it once a month on all of my gessies, succulents and orchids. Great natural leaf shine!
hi p mom/3..thanks...it is the greenlight brand...and i did see it on wormsway...but the shipng made it more so i wanted to ck it out..by the way...when i lived in Mo and worked for Western Union..i made visits to a store in Nevada...could it have been called Harts?...i can't quite recall...bob
I use Neem oil Also.
I would be happy to show ya when I see you on Tuesday Bob :)
It shines the leaves up really nice...Also it helps with bugs but interrupting their life cycle :)
I buy mine alone now! For 11.50 a container of it...it is concentrate.
When I bought it at busyt Bee..It was 8.88 for Green light, a one quart that was not a concentrate.
lorry..please remember to show me the neem you have etc...lol...am surely looking forward to our visit..
Oh it is in plain site LOL
and we can spray down a plant or two together!
No problem on showing ya!
If you can stand my concrete floors! Hurricane puppy damage is what I call it...We pulled up all of our carpet now to put down tile! So a bit of a mess...Between that ..the birds and the dogs :) It is a messy place LOL
Violet barn carries the concentrate though for 11.50...if you were looking at the grow light stuff for 12.00 that is expensive..and you can get it 3.00 cheaper at Busy Bee :)
don't know bout violet barn....and hey...nobody's place is more of a mess than mine..rofl....i keep threatening to spend more time inside..but find myself in the junjgle...between the jungle and the gym....fraid the mobil home i have doesn't get much done...he he
Jungle--Don't know about name of the store. I'll ask DH. I've only lived here for 2 years although he grew up here and we moved here to work for the family firm. I will say that living here is a true test for a girl raised close to KC--there is nothing to do and only Wal-Mart (which I HATE). Needless to say, we travel to go shopping. I'm praying for a Target.... :)
Back to Neem. Did you check Cape Cod Violetry? I just received an order last week (he has keikigrow!) and UPS shipping for 2 bags of vermiculite, 2 bags of perlite and keikigrow was $6.00 (very reasonable to me).
hi plant..yep that is most reasonable charge....i remember that Nevada like so many other small Mo cities are pretty isolated and not a lot to do..but dont i recall you being close to lake of the ozarks?
Ali's favorite shopping place with big coupons has it too

I bought two containers of bat guana about siz months ago still have not opened one so it goes a long way :)) The best worm castings, kelp meal, Fish emolsion I've used is from Gardens Alive...
JungleBob--You have a good memory! Lake of the Ozarks is about 1 1/2 hours away. I think we have someone who posts on this forum who actually lives in Springfield (spacewarp??). We go there sometimes, but Kansas City and big KS shopping is only about an hour away so we go there once a week. You're right, there's not much to do here and you have to pay to join the library, which is a very small, musty room.
I still stand behind Neem Oil vs others. I tried using Safer Insecticial Soap for awhile, but it adversely affected my violets (some plants died). Neem oil affects the entire life cycle of the insect, which means that it affects the eggs also. I have gardening friends who use the oil spray that Gardens Alive sells on their outdoor plants where there is more of a chance that there are beneficial insects that you don't want to kill, i.e., lady bugs, praying mantis, etc. Unfortunately, there aren't too many beneficial insects indoors that I want to spare. :)
Oil-Away Oil is effective against adelgids, aphids.
mealybugs, mites. scale, thrips, and whitefly, and more. even effective on houseplants.
Effective for long periods. Most pesticides kill by poisoning, but Oil-Away kills primarily by suffocating insects and their eggs. Partly for that reason, no insect is known to have developed resistance to any spray oil!
Apply as needed, without worry. Oil-Away can be used repeatedly without concern about adverse effects on people, wildlife or the environment
I put it right into my plant water and top water for prevention works well on and fungus gnats... I have to be real careful what I use with my ilness. I need to be 30 feet or more from fumes, smoke, people coughing sneezy ..chemicals, and more..not to mention it's safe for pets. I have used it for a couple years, Also Murphy's Oil Soap, Lysol...with good luck. I hate to say this but never had any pest problem except
gnats.
I know neem oil is excellent , I have never used it just from what others have said.
But I also know Oil-Away™ Insecticidal Spray has worked excellent by experience for me :))
Allison
I watered my AVs a couple of days ago and added a capful of Murphy's Oil Soap to each gallon as Allison suggested. It does seem to have knocked back the gnat population! :-) However, I also used it to water in some new leaf cuttings, and I promptly lost 4 or 5 leaves (got soft and wilted, then just turned to mush). I don't generally lose this many, at least not so quickly, and I wondered if maybe the Murphy's had anything to do with it? Of course, it could have been random bad luck, and it certainly doesn't seem to have affected all the leaves that I just put down, so.... ?
I sprayed the downstairs AVs with neem oil several days ago, and they all look great -- no damage to the leaves (I was careful to dry the crown when necessary, but I was just using a gentle mist, so mostly I didin't get big droplets), and the mildew (which was decreasing) is now almost entirely gone. I will spray the upstairs AVs asap! :-)
Is it the neem that has helped your Powdery mildew? I had a minor patch of it on a small leaf or two, but after being out of town for little more than a day and a half, (returned today)I had a more serious problem on quite a few plants! I usually like to fix problems with better cultural practices. You mentioned heat helping; but I'm afraid I cannot do that.
Plantmom, it is such a blessing that you garden in such a boring-sounding place, eh?
Kenton
Yes, I think the neem quickly took care of the remaining powdery mildew! Using the heating mats to make the temperatures a little higher (and, probably more importantly, a little more even) helped a good bit, I think, but a few plants still had significant amounts of PM on their leaves. Now, there's hardly a speck to be seen on the ones I sprayed with neem, and it's been 4 or 5 days!
Hmm. I guess I'm going shopping tomorrow, too.
Thank you Jill,
Kenton
In the meantime, check out this thread I started about treatment for powdery mildew, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/562495/
Not knowing what else to do at first, I took the plants that had it to the garage (eg, away from other plants) and just blew on them hard, which poofed most of the visible powdery mildew off the leaves. I also dusted a little cinnamon around -- may have helped a little, maybe not, but it did smell yummy!
I never did try the lysol or the baking soda tricks.... but I can vouch for the neem oil!
Thanks, Jill, I've been outside too much to be thorough in DG anymore!
I was reading the Customer Reviews on Neem oil on Worm's Way. Neem oil is all natural too. And it says to add dish soap to (use a drop of dish soap to emulsify the mix) .The price for 8 oz. is pretty low.
What ever works best for you or something you have been using for a long time has worked well for you keep using it ! If it's not broken don't fix it. lol
If you buy your neem oil at Worm's way the Average Customer Rating is only 1.9 but only three people told about it. I'd like to see more ratings . Not many companys have ratings this is always helpful.
I feel thses a lot of good products and ways to do things out there ! Makes the World go round and gives us Choices.
I don't want to change my luck saying this but I've had such good luck if something is not wrong I'm feeling I should keep doing what I'm doing. You should to as all our needs and enviroments are different !
Worms way looks to be a neat store, I'm giving it a look over :)) Do we have this store in our Sticky ??
I like on-line stores the more the Merrier :))

Allison,
I went to check Worm's Way and the rating for Dyna Grow pure Neem Oil was 3.9, although after adding my review, it went up to 4.1. :)
Cool that's aweseom..I was surprised to see it low as I know so many people use it !
Critter, when I discovered fungus gnats in my 100% perlite tray, I mixed a cap of neem and a cap of Murphy's into a gallon and a half bucket of water and then tediously dipped and washed each leaf in the solution before replanting into a new tray of perlite. So each leaf was completely submerged and swirled around in the stuff - not a problem one.
BUT, with all the new bargain violets that I got from DP, as you may recall, I repotted all of them, gave them a neem dunk/spray etc for two treatments and almost everyone has wilted outter leaves. They aren't dead, and all are starting to perk up, but I thought I was going to lose them. I wish I could explain why those aren't happy and the leaves are. Same proportions of neem to water, (i used warm water too).
It could be that they are just protesting all the handling. Being shipped and then repotted right away, roots trimmed, dipped in neem water etc, I just don't know.
I could be that they stayed too wet even though I wicked them on an old bath towel until no more water came out.
It apparently was low because there were only 3 reviews and 1 of the reviews gave it a one for its bad smell alone! :)
I agree with you, Allison--if something works for a person, keep doing it!
What is the Murphy's Oil Soap for?
Murphy oil sopa I put a capful into gallon of plant water will kill soft body bugs/insects.
Begonia I feel the leaves did not mind the wash as much as they have no roots to get adjusted too. You can set leaves in water they don't mind but roots do. My plants I got from DP Were not that great, I took all soil and roots off and just have crowns and those were washed and dipped , left to dry naturaly and then I fill solo cups up press the crown in and they just grow new plants for me. So far everything is looking good. I hate that their in mini greenhouse no light just natural but I have to isolate them this way.
I feel your plants will perback up. When I keep the roots and drench roots, rootball, plants foliage it all. , I then lay the plant on several paper towels to dry, in about 15 minutes I remover those paper towels and lay them on several fresh ones. I let them sit on a saucer or something like this sometimes a day or two until the soil drys up :))
Good Luck !
Yea, I did that paper towel thing yesterday. One of my noids got left on the wicking pot for a few days before I remembered it was on it, so I took it out of it's pot yesterday and have been doing the whole process you described above. I don't think I'll lose it, but I did lose a noid yesteday to rot. I managed to save about 8 good leaves so at least I have them.
Hmm.... begonia, you used the Murphy's also with the AVs that got wilted outer leaves, right? The leaf cuttings that look bad here got watered with Murphy's but no neem yet.... I watered everything with the Murphy's as a preventative, even the just-planted (like moments ago) pots that hadn't had a chance to acquire gnats yet, and that may just have been too much for some of the newly cut leaves to take. I think the 'Grape Slush' leaves are goners, but that's OK, as I just managed to pull 4 suckers off that plant! I broke another leaf off in the process, so I potted that up too -- used only plain water on this one. :-)
What happen with Begonia her Murphy oil and neam wash leaves were fine..
But the DP plants all she did was neem them and they are not fine. This is how I read it slow. Is this correct Laurie ? That's what I gave the anser for and why it might have happened.
I would not use both use one or the other . If you use Neem you don't need Murphy...
" Jill this is what she said about Neem"
>>>>>>>>>>>>BUT, with all the new bargain violets that I got from DP, as you may recall, I repotted all of them, gave them a neem dunk/spray etc for two treatments and almost everyone has wilted outter leaves. I only use one cap of Murphy's oil in one gallon..but I never would or have used it with Neem. But this was not the problem she used Neem only on the wilting plants. It may not be the Neem's fault, could be the plants, cold, too much water then they got cold being wet...you maybe water with warm then room temp. cold they are going to get come.
Do the dry out thing...I set one plant for todays without re-potting just on Paper towels...You had some problems with plants a week or so ago from too wet, cold...so I don't think it's the neem. But be careful to much of a good thing can be bad.
PS I rad on the sight of Stephanie's like they said add a drop of dish soap to the neem oil..
Correct VT, I believe it might be the case of too much of a good thing. THey're still hanging in. I just checked them.
right.... I read the same thing you did, Allison, I just wasn't sure if she'd used both neem and Murphy's on the bargain AVs (even though she only mentioned neem)... she did mention using both together on the leaf cuttings, and the combination didn't seem to do them any harm.
Ah, there she is, posting while I'm typing!
So.... did you use both neem & Murphy's on the plants that got a little wilted after treatment?
no, just the neem. I used the MOS & neem on the leaves only.
oh yea, I forgot, I used the systemic too. At first no problem but may have had a delayed reaction. (Bayers)
OK, so the mystery remains as to why my AV leaves didn't like the Murphy's... It may have been some other problem entirely, of course, or it may have been that the Murphy's isn't good on freshly cut leaves. I've been trying that technique with putting down the leaf at a shallow angle and scraping a little "skin" off the top side of the stem where it's buried (equivalent to making a really long angled cut to get more area for plantlets to form)... could be that allowed too much Murphy's to be absorbed by those leaves.
I don't think it was the Murphys, it was more than likely the 'coctail' of all of the above, combined with repotting after a cold long trip. Luckily, all is not lost. And it adds to my learning curve. Which is getting better and beter.
And remember, Ali has the golden touch! I'm still looking for mine!
