how bout slicing av's and chimeras to get more plants

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

couldn't one just slice the plants vetically with roots and make more plants that way?..especially like chimeras?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Slice it ? What about the crown > ? Some people behead them . I did it twice with two expensive plants, not only did I lose the two crowns I lost both plants. lol Now I just take a leaf or two off of the the crown and the plant starts to suckers. Not sure where your slicing it ?

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

allison..;i was thinking like i do with amaryllis bulbs....slide it vertically....making 2 or more out of it...couldn't one cut the crown...vertically and have 2 or more cuttings?

I think you would loose the symetry, which is for me one of the beauties of the av

I had better luck with African Violets when I lived in Florida. They loved the high humidity and bright light on the window sill sheltered by the porch roof. When the plant got so big that it was 2 plants at the top, I did what I'd seen my grandmother do when I was a child: she'd dump the plant and the root ball out of the pot, then using a steak knife she'd cut the plant from the top right through to the bottom of the root ball and re-pot the 2 halfs. Yes you have flat sided plants for a while but within a few months I had 2 dinner plate sized plants. This method worked better for me as I never had good luck rooting leaves. It sounds extreme but it works well

This is very interesting just like taking a trailer aprat and it looks better later. There are a few links on Chimeras in out Stickey one where you see they take the crown off ;

I understand this wroks for many and Chimeras cost a lot so sellers would want to do this. But I tried it twice on $20.00 plants and I just lost it all. So now I just take a leaf or two off a crown of a trailer or Chimera and it suckers away for me !
Also once you get the simole science of progating by leaf it is so easy. And one leaf can give you 1-6 or more nice healthy babies. I like so many different named African violets , and have hundreds of leaves down and would not want many violets cut in half around. Now if it was a bulb, or tuber type plant then I'd say yes :))
Here's that one link.

thanks allison...you can tell im impatient with most things...lol

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I have some chimeras...It is probably best to cut off the suckers and propogate them that way...Also you can take off flower stems with leaves on each side.
With what you pay for chineras..I would be terrified to split mine.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

but...if one could master this approach....it would be instant gratification...lol...and more plants quickly...

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I just order TheAlps from the Violet barn...This is my heaven for chimeras LOL.
I also have monique and a few other chimeras.....Since Monique is not that expensive...I may try it with her...>I would not be destroyed if I lost her :)

LOL or maybe she should go home with you and you can try it.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

lol..lorry...you guys have so much more expertise NOW..than i did in the 60's...i would say my expertise if i have any is in some tropicals..and certainly..plumeria..frangipani...when i used "expertise"...i mean primarily from experience with a plant or testing methods etc..i hope more people will read the thread i put on this forum and think at sticky now...about culturing african violet leafs...just think..one could get maybe 100's if not 1000's of plants from one leaf with this mehtod

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Me expertise?
Oh ... I am still new to this! Especially in propagating them!
This is officially the first time I ever even put down leaves :)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

lol...well im in the same boat with you

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I took two expensive Chimeras and took the crowns off and did like in the pictures as a lot of people in a group was doing it. And I lost the crowns and the plants :((. I would never do it again :((. I have been lucky lately with bloom stalk basket babies :)) and new crowns growing from same trailing plant and suckers. I have about 6 tiny, tiny basket babies and suckers slowly growing I hope to have babies to share :)) I do know by experience is you take a leaf or two off of the crown it will force not only new leaves but suckers too ! Allison

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

allison...thanks for that suggestion...as i mentioned..i haven't done much of this since the 60's....so in a very real sense i am new to all of this as well...however i have always been a believer in "nothing ventured..nothing gained"...so i am open to everyone's suggestions..and experience certainly is the teacher....i suspect like all plants..when they are bruised...cut..etc..that they "panic" and their desire to exist makes them put out more leaves...blooms and suckers...makes sense...you've got it going on Allison.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh your so right . I killed a lot experimenting . lol But sometimes these methods work for many others don't work for me so you never know until you try them :))

Braselton, GA(Zone 7b)
