snowball bush and ostrich ferns

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I really only have a short wish list at this point - famous last words. I would love to have a white snowball bush, the old fashion kind like my grandmother had. I would also like 2 or 3 ostrich ferns. Let me know if you have these beauties and I'll see what's in my trade for the up coming spring.

I am so sad! LOL I was hoping you had Ostrich ferns! I have been looking at growers catalogues and wholesalers online and every site I have been to has sold out of ostrich ferns and cinnamon ferns! I have all this shade and water now and no ferns. booo hooooo.

Good luck!

LOL, I was hoping you were offering the Ostrich ferns too,

I will have cuttings or probably sprouts of the snowball bush in the Spring. I will forget I told you, if you can remind me I will be glad to send you some.

Good news! I just got an email from a grower! He still has them! Woo hooo! I had to go through like 6 wholesalers to find them! I am afraid to get too far ahead of myself but I should be able to get my tax ID tomorrow then I can get them. I am waiting on prices. If you want, I can get extra and trade? I am thinking I want a couple dozen of those and also Cinnamon ferns to put across the front of my garage, which is about 40' long and a few for the front of the house.

Kathy, I have lots of snowball bushes that I can send you. I'm not sure on the exact variety. Check out this tread for the specifics. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/566845/

Kathy,
I have something simular but I would like the old fashion bush with huge white poms. The kind that reminds us of grandma's house.

Let me know if anyone has one.

Kathy, I have the snowball bush you are wanting. Mine came from my Granny's house about 20 years ago. I had a large bush and didnt care for it properly....got a little careless with roundup...etc.

But I have another that I planted last spring..it should bloom this year. I "think" I also have a few in pots that are maybe about 12-18 inches tall ? Not really planning on trading these but you might tempt me for one if you have something that I really need.

No hard feelings if we cant trade. I've made a vow this year to trade more wisely. I spent too much on postage last year :)
thanks

What are you looking for? I will have corkscrew willow trees to start very soon. They root in just a couple days and are beautiful !! I just keep cutting mine back and sharing them with everyone. They can get very large but with my snippers they stay under control. They don't need a wet enviroment like other willows. I could send you several of those.

I have lots of cleome seeds, scarlet runner beans, and a beautiful cactus that produces bright yellow flowers. It dies back and looks almost soggy but perks right up every year and is also shared with my friends - it's beautiful hanging over a tub.

I've been a DG member for a few years. I stand good with trades and feel my trades are very good in size - I like to share and exchange - it's lots of fun.

Let me know.

So does anyone know the exact name of the snowball plant like grandma used to have? Is it one of the viburnums or is it a different species? I have always wanted one of those too!

Gwendalou

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I had to look this up several years ago when my elderly neighbor wanted one and for the life of me I cannot remember what the other one is. She got the Viburnum as a snowball bush and it wasn't what she wanted. Hmmm.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

This is still bugging me. LOL I am wondering if the other is a Hydrangea? When someone has called a plant by the same name for 80 years, there is no changing their mind! I just can't remember which she wanted.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Hydrangea anabelle is called old fashioned snowball bush here, huge white flower clusters and gets about 5 feet tall and wide, I have it and ostrich ferns, I dig up and throw them away they spread like crazy here. :-) one mans plants are another mans weeds I guess!
Kyle

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You throw away ostrich ferns??? And you tell me this AFTER I buy $150 worth?!?! LOL

Anabelle is the one I kept coming across. :)

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm with you Badseed ! We just invested money for those darn ferns. KYLE, if you have some snowball starts would you consider sending me some for postage or possible trade? And I would take some ferns too. You can get some good trades from that "weed' you've got going.

Let me know.

Kyle doesn't have room for those mundane perennials because he prefers the free hernia that comes with dragging in and out all those tropicals. ROTFLOL Kyle, I can send you a hernia!!!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I made a promise this year not to move any plants in or out that weigh more than 50lbs. YEAH right! LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Let me know how that works out for you cuz I don't believe a word of it! :)

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

you too HUH??? LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm worried. My yard is much bigger now. LOL I may break down and buy one of those plant dollies....

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Yes, Kyle has wonderful stuff for sure.

Kathy...if you dont work something out with Kyle..dmail me. I just happened to come back here and see your post.

Now I have to go look up Ostrich Fern to see what it is :)

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Charlotteda,
Did you see anything on my list above that might interest you in trade for a couple starts of yours? Let me know.

Kyle,
I'll try to remind you in March, per your note.

I cut back my Corkscrew willows yesterday and have several good starts left - I took a truck load (not really that much but my mother thought so) to mom yesterday and she put them in a 5 gal bucket to root. She is using her cuttings to for a hedge and a privacy fence by her deck. Mine are trees but if you cut them short, we've found they form multiple starts from the small cut and form beautiful, graceful "hedge".

I'll take a picture of both our trees soon and post. Let me know if anyone wants a few starts.
Kathy

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Kathy...I had a corkscrew willow once..but when it got about 6 feet tall - it had an unfortunate experience with round up. Can you believe that...I could have cried.

Send me a personal dave mail of what you might have to trade and I'll slop down through the mud here and see whats down there :)
