Vintage Plants

Silver Spring, MD

I just DM'ed Allison to get some advise. Then I thought maybe all would like to get in on this. One of the sites I was looking at this afternoon had a great idea. They were trying to save or bring back vintage violets. Each member was to adopt a vintage plant and keep it in their collection. I asked Allison if she would DM some pictures of her favorite vintage from FC. MIght be a nice challenge for us to adapt one of the vintage plants.

Abilene, TX

Cool. I will try to do this. P )

The plants the other group was working with had to be at lease 40 years old.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a couple vintage varieties..
Pixie pink, Lela Marie, I think Tiny Limelight is a vintage also?
Maybe others..LOL I don't know!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

According to First Class 20-25 years old is Vintage..
And the one's 40 years old plus are going to be hard to get.
Lela Marie,is 1984, and Skagit Tiny Limelight 1981 yes both..And the Skagit's or any of W. Lindstrom plants are have been hard to get and getting harder.
I wish I had them all.
I could never pick one. I tried to send a Vintage in each box I have sent out to people ! All the Date's Wasp plants are from the 1960's at least.

Some of my favorite's is Ethel Champion. She was one of the best Progaters and passed this past Summer in her 90's . She was the first for the yellow crown variegation and Mosaic foliage.
I wish I could have all her plants most so hard to get . I have her Plain and Fancy which is extermly rare . I have never seen it for sale any where nor on Ebay. I sent on to Linda in her box she was wanting the yellow crown variegation.
Plain and Fancy is gorgeous growing large Av from 1975. I wish I had all her Midget's .. I have Midget Lillian , Ramblin Midget ( trailer) , Ramblin' Ruby,
Lillian Sparkler, Marmalade, those are a few of her's off the top of my head I am growing and oh wish I had more !
I love White Madonna and White Butterfly both from 1963, The King is gorgeous ( think I sent a couple out maybe one to Lauri ?) is from 1975, Black Ace from 1978 is stunning. I also have baby Jason growing from 1976, Chanticleer from 1963 ( I've grown Lorry has now ) , Double Black Cherry from 1960 , Emilie Savage1983 I have love her, Paumanok 1986 , Mini Minx.1980, Silver Wings .
Oh my just a few off the top of my head I have that I love ! I'm always looking for more !

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Wow, i didn't realize I had that many vintage AV
White Madonna (leaves down too)
The King
Royal Wasp
The Martian
maybe some of the others.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I am going to go through the list again and make sure I at least have leaves of all of my vintage ones down

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes that will be great ! Everyone should grow some Vintage and put leaves donw to share them ! Oh yes I forgot I do have more like Pixie Pink and Blue... :)) Pride's Pink Trail, Angel tears trail , Buckeye Trail,:)) I think of more I still have :))

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

As soon as my First Class program arrives, I will know more about which vintage violets I might have in my collection! I do have 'Midget Gumdrop' to share around this spring (and I'm swapping it to Allison for her 'Midget Lilian', so we'll help keep those two going).

Nanna, did this site have a list of vintage varieties in the "over 40" category? I've seen AVSA's "most wanted" list, but I'm not sure those varieties are necessarily just the older vintage AVs.

Silver Spring, MD

Yes It did. I will try to find it again and post it

I have Fireball if anyone would like leaves when it gets warmer.

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

I did have some wonderful vintages before I lost my entire collection. I am in the slow process of building up a collection again, but do not have any vintages. I am trying to track down one I believe is a vintage - Ballet EL Ina. I think this is a truly outstanding project to continue the availability of vintages.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I would love some Jannich :)

And I will have some vintage violets to share come spring :)
I even have at least one vintage mini :)

I will have to inventory again and look on the vintage list to see if I have more.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Nanna
I have blonged to this group for years. They are saying adopt Violets under the age 1980. ... And this has been at least a couple years I think ssense it started :)) I have several listed .
The list they have from A-Z from Fisrt class is either no longer complete or was not complete from FC before but is a nice list :))
I thought you might have meant them but I knew it did not say Av's 40 or more years old so I was not sure ?
Jannice I think your Fireball is Ultra Violet Fireball and not the Vintage one Sorry.
MsC has the Vintage Fireball and Violet Gallery is selling it.
First class has four av's with Fireball in it's name and only one is Fireball vintage. Chances if you bought it at HD, or other stroe it's an Ultra Violet, Rhapsdoy, Optimara, .. and hard to ever find the true name.
I was reading this again last night over again in Violet Voice:
SHOULD WE TRY TO FIND NAMES FOR OUR NO NAME PLANTS?

I looked at the collectors page on Violet Barn and found i would like to include in my collection; Berry Splash, Happy Harold and Ohio Bountiful.

Violet Gallery has White Madona, plant and the leaves of Hand Picked and Tommy Lou.

I think I will wait just a bit because of the weather.

The article was very good. There really are so many look alikes. It's really chancey to guess at a name.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Violet Gallery won't ship until May or maybe April if warm...but I put my order in already to hold the ones I want. I think Jill did also. I did order Vintage, Mini's and girl foliage and trailers ! They will not charge me until they ship.Besdies I like their plants their healthy and good size !
I have White Madonna super vintage girl foliage. I have a beauty in nautral light she's been blooming long time she has MsC's name on her. I do have some babies coming up so may have more and White Butterfly also !

WhitE mAdONNA AND wHITE bUTTERFLY ARE so alike both vintage from 1953.One has single white , one has double white blossoms ..both girl ... I read on the Sport link Pink Madonna is a Sprot of White Madonna . That would be a pretty one too !
Oh it's ok Jannich I was hoping it was that one when you fist got it too :)) I thought I had ordered it from Violet Gallery but I think I knocked it off my list
as it was too long to afford. I'm hoping MsC is putting a lot of leaves down and I may have one ! :))

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Allison ,Funny Bunny sounds beautiful.I Love the wasp plants.I think they are my favorites.I sent do D-mail:)

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Something about those Vintage Wasp easy to grow by leaf, easy growing plants always blooming happy in the Windowsills or under lights :))
They remind me a lot of some of the SPecies which makes me feel Mr. Dates used one as a parent for some of his many Wasp plants :))

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Did Dates keep records as to who the parents were?

Silver Spring, MD

Allison, I found Happy Harold at Violet Barn, I hope. (Stock permitting)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

HH is a beauty! love the foliage!! http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/HappyHaroldLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/HappyHaroldLrg.jpg#

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, gosh, begonia.... you just *had* to show me that photo, didn't you?? What a lovely plant! Maybe Nanna's plant will be able to spare a leaf.... hahaha, if I end up picking them up for her instead of both of us traveling up together this spring, she will never believe than any broken leaves were truly accidental during transport!

Silver Spring, MD

I think the whole purpose of the Vintage plants is to set leaves and share. I certainly will do just that. (even if accidents happen! wink, wink)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Critter, who would believe that story? Certainly not an AV addict!! (giggle)

I have a sport of funny bunny :)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Ali, you sent me 4 little funny bunny leaves - none made it I'm sad to say. But now I've developed a better system for rooting leaves. Most of the leaves you sent are rooted now, but only just now putting out rootlets, the leaves I set in perlite root in about 10 days to 2 weeks. So I know better now how to have a lower mortality rate. When I potted up the leaves you sent, I used a 30/30/30 mix perlite, vermiculite and soil-less mix. I put them in solo cups with wicks and watered. Well they mostly just stayed too wet. leaves are soft but still alive. The ones I put in perlite tray are crisp and rooting like crazy. I potted up half a dozen leaves yesterday - into a 60/40 perlite/soil less mix in solos. Once I see 1/2 inch roots, I'm putting them in to the soil mix. Then they got the VF - 11.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

I heard from the lady who sells VF11 and she is finally sendng me the sample.
I am going to have to buy some of this miracle fertilizer.
Can you buy it online.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That sould great Bgonia. It's colder where you are and less humidity . I like to use one Part Por mix or
something like it and 3 parts Prelite sometimes more I like my soil-less mixture light . I don't cover anything . I'm sorry your little Bunny leaves died. I have leaves down and a few babies you can have one. I can't bleive how fast they grow and the flowers cover the whole plant. I just love mine !
Yes someone else was telling me their Vf-11 sample is on its way. The thing is VF-11 needs and wants to work alone. For best results don't fertilize for a month, or flush plant threw or newly potted plants then use it. When I fist got it I had bought this awesome soil-less mixture at my local group at a discount of $1.50 a gallon. I also fount all my plants were in pots too large. I transplanted everyone of my plants. Then when I got my Elenaor's VF-11 it was their only fertilizer. I use to buy a case of four gallons from her at a time and use it on our lawn and flower beds for about 19 dollars a gallon. one gallon makes 128 gallons of food ! Charley's greenhouse sells it and now that I don't need as much I think I will buy it by the gallon from him !
Happy Growing :))
