Cannas and Naked Ladies Confusion

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I orginally posed this on Lilys. I'm a newbee here and still trying to figure things out :). O.K. I have what I have been told are Old Stock cannas and ladies. I was giving them away left and right and was told not to as they were rare anymore. The nursery I gave some to is selling them for an outrageous price. Why are they rare? What is Old Stock? I'll post a picture of the cannas this past summer. TIA Lauri

Well I am not sure if I can answer this any better than most. The cannas look to be tiki torch or similar. This is not extremely rare really but is a old hybrid.
I breed new hybrids but their are hybrids dating back to the late 1800s and older. These are vintage cannas and a lot of them are beautiful and fairly rare to find depending on which hybrid it is. Some of these old hybrids still have the new hybrids beat today in beauty. Their are also a lot of what I would call older hybrids that have now been improved on so much that they are really not that interesting anymore. This tiki torch is one that many people grew back in the day. But it is now not the best form on the market. We now have much brighter and larger flowering forms. Still some people like vintage. Let me know if you need anymore help thanks.

Thanks to you both!!! I want to make room and get more varities in so I guess I will. bwilliams, is it true if you cut the flower stalks to the ground when they're done blooming they re-bloom? I've jsut been cutting off the dead blooms and they re-bloom from there. Thanks again...Lauri

Brian got me into cannas as i live right down the street and consider him a friend. If you cut back your cannas to the ground they will need to re-grow to a certin size before re-blooming i could be wrong so brian?

thanks

Hi Lauri ~ glad to see you're getting the answers you were after. I hope you have a deal going with that nursery for store credit, at the very least! :)

Moby, I wish. I went down and asked them if they knew what kind they were and they did'nt so I told them and they said oh well your loss!!! I was just trying to help a new neighborhood nursery by being nice, I won't make that mistake again and won't go there any more! .. Lauri
