What about sea holly? Here's a description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_holly

Currently, Dutch Gardens is offering a darker blue variety called Blue Star. I think there are also seed sources. Parts of the plant are edible. Yuska

The seem to leave Crinum, Gerbera Daisy, Cuphea, Lorepetalatum, Dianthus alone, too.

Hello Ted; Here is a link to a site that will tell you everything you might want to know about deer resistant plants.
There is a big selection so you should be able to find some that work for your location and your budget.
Please let us know what worked for you.

Hi Ted...I live just south of you and I can tell you some of the plants that have worked pretty well down here, or should I say "survived". I have a flower bed I refer to as my moon garden...it's farthest from the water source and gets lots of afternoon sun. Its also a pretty good distance from the house and very close to the woods, and deer. So far this year they have left alone: mealy blue sage, salvia greggii, Texas sage (cenizo), santolina, artemisia (Powis Castle), trailing lantana, Mexican bush sage and standing cypress. They've munched my daylilies to the ground but I have faith they'll be back this spring...with the rains (I hope). All of these plants are drought tolerant and can really take the heat. Just keep in mind, when its this dry, and deer are hungry, they'll eat darn near anything. I've had to raise my bird feeders to keep the deer from cleaning them out each night....And I have 2 dogs that stay outside all night! ( But they're getting old and seem to miss a lot of late night activity!) Hope this helps!

Deer also don't seem to like strong smelling plants, like rosemary. You might try some flowers in among some of the plants they don't like, though as said above, when the conditions are right, they'll eat just about anything. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Canyon Lake, TX(Zone 9b)

Hi Ted, we live in Canyon Lake, and the deer are thick as hair on a dogs back, but they do not like Citrus, Ficus, Ginger, Mints, Texas Silverado Sage, they leave centruy plants alone, except when they are losing their velvet on their antlers, then will get in the plant and tear it up, trying to scrape it off. We also put moth balls in a circle around the trees, but had to put cages around them, anyway. Most all of the stuff you named, they love. They will eat the blooms off the Lantana, but not the plant. They left my Petunias alone, and cabbage, and bananas. They do not like onions, garlic, They loved my wild flowers we planted,! We put a wooden log fence 5 ft. high, and ran wire between the openings, and plugged it into the Electric deal, I put Peanut butter on the wire, and believe me, when that little buck licked the peanutbutter off, it really rang his antlers, and we saw him making a huge circle around the house after that. Oh, yes they do not like Kolochas either. Maybe this will help you, good luck! Krispi
