Garden Watchdog has some mixed reviews about Gardens Alive. http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/146/
I haven't ordered from them, but it looks like the product problems were more often with plants than with fertilizers etc. Also, their web site is apparently prone to glitches, so you may be ahead to simply phone in your order.... if you do order online, be sure to print out a copy of your shopping cart to verify your order.
I keep meaning to order something with one of their "$20 free" coupons, and then their catalog gets shuffled to the bottom of the pile and the coupon expires.... maybe this year!
Oh I'll have to look and give my review . I have ordered from them several times a year for at least three years and always everything has been perfect !
i have ordered from GArdens Alive before and i think they are excellent.
I just went and gave my two cents review ! I have been a memeber and ordered from them several times a year over the past three years ! Everyting from fast service, ordering on line, products , low shipping cost excellent ! I always lose a coupon they come out often. Today if I bought $50.00 I got $25.00 off and another 10 percent off for bing a member. My $50.00 plus order ended up costing my about $25.00 and this included shipping ! And Worm castings and other items are heavy ! I
Their first $20.00 coupon they give first time buyers you don't even have to spend a penny :)) I don't know how they make money.
I order on line also never a problem. And I just love their products. I say if you have not tried them use the $20.00 coupon for a free order and see for yourself ! Allison
I have ordered from them and never had a problem, service was good. Can't imagine them being problematic.
Yes ! And yesterday I ordered an other order with a $25.00 coupon off of $50.00 :)) I have always been happy with them !
Thanks for the input. I wasn't trying to be critical, since I don't have any experience with them yet myself, but I wanted to remind folks that checking the Watchdog can be useful. As I said, most complaints seemed to be about website glitches, and hopefully they've fixed those.
That's good Jill that way I could know and go give an excellent review. If you have not tried them use the $20.00 and try them get something free. Maybe a nice leaf tray :))Seed-Starter Greenhouse
on sale link above :))
They want an awful lot for that seed starter tray. I can usually get the bottom tray, dome, and plastic insert cell packs for $1-2 each piece, and HD generally has sets like this (maybe by Jiffy?) for about $6. I do re-use cell packs (bleach & hot water, of course!) sometimes, but it's often easier to buy new ones. Maybe the insert cell packs for this "greenhouse" tray are much sturdier, as they do say they're reusable, but $11-12 still seems high to me.
Maybe some nice worm castings.... or a bottle of Pyola....
Where do you guys buy the cell trays? I have been buying them online but may be cheaper to buy them locally. I just have not had luck finding them.
Lorry, I get mine from the hydroponic store and our local version of HD
Hmm I have never seen them at home depot and I asked.
They sent me to the peat pots which was not what I was looking for.
I wonder if we have a hydroponic store..I will need to find out!
I like the cell trays as they minimize the room all these leaves are taking up!
I have been using the clear shoe boxes for years. First I have "35 "6 quart all filled but then hubby started getting me the larger ones. They can be bought any where starting about 79 cents ! I use the lids for plant trays. I use solo cups for leaves/rooting. Every week to two every thing gets bleached ! I'm a bleach freak :))
Our store is called Yard Birds, and it's not a HD, but similar stuff, garden center, hardware, home remodel etc. All the same stuff, BUT a better and different selection. I think there are about half a dozen in the SFO bay area. SADLY the owner is terminally ill and just sold his stores to GUESS WHO? Yep, HD will take over in the spring. Which is too bad, I've never been to a HD where the house plant section didn't look like a mortuary for plants. So many over/under watering casualties!!
Our yardbirds has tons of great stuff for the gardener! VF-11 by the gallons!!! LOL
I get the jiffy trays there too that I use under my perlite rooting trays.
Yesterday, I was at a HD and bought some closet shelving to make yet another set of shelves for plants and they were out of the brackets but had them at a HD about 15 minutes away, so I drove down there and remembered that the 24" grow light I got needed a bulb. When I asked the guy working in lighting about it, he grabbed one from the shelf that had been opened already and come to find out they had the bulb included. So as he was packing it up, I picked up the instruction paper that had fallen on the floor. "here, don't for get to put this inside" i said.
He said "Oh it doesn't matter, we're going to throw it away anyway" I picked up my jaw and said "why would you throw it away, it perfectly new"
He then proceeded to tell me that HD has a policy that open packages like this are generally put in the dumpster and that they don't have a 'dent and scratch' section. That they throw away over 1 million dollars worth of goods that are like this every year.
Now multiply that by over 2000 stores and do the math. That is a lot of waste. I almost couldn't stomach it. The thought of tossing out a perfectly good grow light because the plastic box was opened was horrific to me. I said too bad they just didn't have a sale section, I'd have bought it right now!
So he winks at me and says, C'mon, I know how to do a special mark down so I'll sell it to you for half price (this was after a long discussion on waste in our country and what these goods could do for a 3rd world developing country etc). So I bought it for $7.
At least it isn't going in the trash.
I feel a letter writing campaign coming on. Look out. Imagine if Lowes does the same thing? Mind boggling.
Sorry to get O/T Ali!
