I received Berkley Breathed's book, "Flawed Dogs: The Year End Leftovers at the Piddleton 'Last Chance' Dog Pound." It's a humerous book that shows the value and dignity of difficult to adopt dogs. In honor of this book, I thought that we could share our own success stories with special needs dogs. Maybe our stories will encourage other people to adopt special needs dogs.
One of my dogs, Gilmore, was a foundling. My friend, Monica, has a soft spot for homeless dogs and she's very good at tracking down pet parents, or new parents if the original parents cannot be found. Gilmore was found chewed up by another dog. He was going blind and his teeth were rotten and dead. She couldn't find anyone who would take him because of his age. I lived in another state at the time, but she talked me into taking him because I was moving back to Indy. He has been a wonderful dog. We've been together for 1 1/2 years and he has learned to cuddle and let me pet him. We still have occassional "marking" issues because he needs to mark things to keep from running into them, but he's so sweet that I don't mind too much. He loves peanut butter and going for walks (I'm his seeing eye person). He's my darling little old man.
