I'm just wondering what everyone does on January 1st of every year to insure good things for the coming year? Here in Oklahoma we've always had a big pot of black-eyed peas. (With cornbread and onions, of course....lol) I know everyone does different things, and I'm always interested to see what they are. Please post what you'll be doing today! Happy New Year EVERYONE!
New Year's Day traditions?
Hah !
I filled out a whole book of checks with '2006' for the date.
lol
What a great idea, Scoot. I'm going to go do that right now. I'm sure we will watch a football game or two before the night is over. Nothing special here.....no traditions.
Deliver the Tamales we made Yesterday to relatives after church .
Hey, I'd love some fresh tamales .
I have only had store bought version ;-)
I am cooking dinner to take to Mother. Just got to decide what to cook.
I am planting some seeds and working on my garden journal getting ready for Spring.
We do the black-eyed peas.. (with bacon) My best friend's mom was a dear southern lady who started us on black-eyed peas many years ago.. She died from brain cancer, and just before she passed away I promised her I'd eat them every year.
Since then, I did some research and learned that one should eat at least one pea for every day of the year to be sure that person won't be penny-less, and eat greens to be sure you will have green money throughout the year.
I make a HUGE pot of beans, greens and cornbread for anyone who will eat them.
LOL ZZ, we have a similar tradition! My mother made us all eat lentils, of all things. I think it may be a German tradition. Why couldn't it be chocolate cake ??
She said if we didn't, we would be poor that year. Evidently the one year early on in their marriage she didn't make them, my father lost his job. The next year, she served plenty and he landed the best job. LOL!! She made a believer out of all her children. LOL. So far it has worked great for all of us.
A few years ago my son was going to be away for New Year's. So I had overnight him a can a lentil soup and a can opener. I was so afraid he wouldn't follow thru on his own. I was frantic.
I just learned from our Sushi man that Japanese people traditionally eat soba noodles at midnight. The long noodles signify a long life. I think I am going to start that tradition. Then we will be rich till a very old age. LOL
Usually we have ham & eggs for breakfast, go for a hike, watch a bit of football & the Rose Parade, but this year the parade is not until tomorrow, & we are both so sore from digging mud off our driveway & fixing swollen creek banks that neither of us cares what goes on today. We are sitting still! I just got out of the hot tub & I can actually move my arms. (right now) The ham is cooking & we'll sit in a warm & cozy house & watch the rain & wind. All of that terrible CA weather on the news is hitting us hard.
Yesterday when working on the creek bank, I heard 2 huge trees crash down, one below me about 300 yards & the other above quite a ways away above me. When I hear that craking noise, I always watch to see if I'm in the path of it. Luckily I have never been right near where they come down. Still scary tho.
Happy New Year everyone! (is that why there are fresh black-eyed peas in the markets?)
