New Camera for Christmas : )

Abilene, TX

Hi all! I got a camera for Christmas, so I will try to post a few pictures. The first one is of my AV stand in the kitchen. I only have one light so far. Hopefully, I will eventually get two more. Got the shelves at Lowe's and the light at Home Depot. Well, here goes. Hope the picture shows up....

Beautiful light plant stand ! nice picture too ! When I got my stand it took me awhile to get all of the light fixtures. . Is that the double four ft light fixtures ? I got some of mine at HD and some at lowes. Great Picture ! Looking forward to more ! Allison

Uh Oh, you're hooked too? LOL, looks awesome!

Yeah, I'm hooked. But I'm having a lot of fun. This is a double four foot light. It was really not that hard to assemble. I think I am going to concentrate on the mini and semimini mostly...that way I can have more. : ) This is in our kitchen, so I am going to try to keep it looking neat. I got the boxes at Tuesday Morning to put most of my supplies in. Will try to attach another picture. I got this cup and saucer for Christmas and it goes pretty well with this plant, I think. I also saw everyone talking about D and P Greenhouse going out of business, so I headed to EBAY and got 6 Daisy planters (the kind with the wick). I am going to repot the plants I got at Rob's in those.

WOW those are beautiful ! If your growing mini/semi's a height of 7-10
inches above your plants ! Allison

Looks great hun!
You are well on your way to being a junkie like the rest of us!
I have TONS of minis and semi minis and LOVE to share.
So we should hook up! :)

Beautiful! I absolutely love the cup and saucer in your pic!

Thanks. I am having fun. Just repotted some plants from Rob's into Dandy pots. They are cute. Got them for $2 each from D&P Greenhouse.

I keep looking for bugs, but I haven't found any. Whenever anyone starts a thread about bugs, it makes me paranoid. : )

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing them.

Lovely pictures! I'm glad you'll be able to show off your plants now on this forum! :-)

Your plant stand is very similar to my new one... I looked at that one at Lowe's, then decided the silver colored one (with a 6th shelf) from Sam's would work better in my hobby room... but that creamy white color really shows off your plants & pots, especially against that gorgeous red wall!

Did you use regular T-12 florescent fixtures, or did you go for one of the newer thin T-8 fixtures? I have T-12's in the basement on my seedling shelves, but I went with the T-8's for upstairs. I'm not sure if the T-8's really put out more light (the lumens rating was about the same, I think), or if it's just that the light is brighter-whiter looking, but we plugged it in, and -- whoa!

Thanks. I am not sure : ) , but I think mine are the T-12. There were some thinner lights, but I was not sure about it, so I stuck with the regular kind. I am not sure if I have the best light right now, so I would like to add another light and buy two lights and trade out so I have two different kinds of light over each shelf. It all sounds easy until I go to the store, then I just wander around in a daze. Normally, I hate Lowes and HD. But, that's where the lights were. : )
Is a T-8 smaller around or is it another shape? HP

Okay..what's a T-12 and a T-8??

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

T-12's are the standard 4 ft. 40 watt florescent tubes, and are about 1 1/2 inches across. T-8's are more like 1 inch in diameter, and because they are more effecient, they use 32 watts to produce about the same amount of light. I liked their smaller profile, and I'd heard good things about using T-8 tubes for aquarium lighting (most of which I only half remember now), so I decided to give them a try. I found I could get bright white "sunlight" bulbs (I'd have to look up their actual Kelvin rating) for about a dollar more per tube than the cool white bulbs I'd been using in my T-12 fixtures, so I went with those.

I like and use the 32 watt four foot high spectrum gro-lights. Last time I had hubby pick up about six ( I need to start replacing some) I had him get cool white as the other were getting so expensive and I need so many. I replace one per fixture at a time so the plants don't go into light shock.
My shelves are 2 feet across so I use two double four foot lights on each. I could use another stand . lol

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I use two double fixtures on my 18 inch wide shelves, also. I figure that one four foot, double tube fixture provides enough light for two 1020 flats of plants. On my new plant stand, I only put two double fixtures on the bottom shelf. Between the light from the window and the apparently brighter color of the T-8 bulbs, I think one fixture apiece may be enough for all other shelves.

I do something similar when replacing light tubes in my double fixtures... I replace one of the tubes, then wait a week or two before replacing the others. As the tubes get older, they start getting dimmer, and replacing both tubes at once is a big, sudden increase in light that could shock your plants.

Whoops, time to turn out the lights in the violet room... I need another 3 prong timer, LOL! (I *knew* there was something we'd forgotten at Home Depot!)
