Please help me ID the locale

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I am hoping some of my gardening friends 'across the pond' can help me out. I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can help me. I am very sorry the picture isn't better as this is a scan of a very old and small b&w photo.

This is my late Father during WW2. The locale is unknown. I am very curious to find out about where this was, about the buildings and cliffs in the background and what the people behind my Father are doing at those tables. My dream is to go there someday.

My best guess is France OR Italy?

What a fascinating photo berrygirl
That certainly isn't the UK and I should think you are right with France or Italy. Sorry I can't help, but would it be OK to forward the photo to my brother who lives in Italy? He may have an idea, you never know. If it's France, I think it's further east than where I am, there are lots of limestone features which could be similar to those cliffs.

philomel,
Yes, you can forward the pic. THANKS so very much for your help!

OK it's on its way - I'll let you know if he comes up with anything. He's been researching our ancestry, so will be used to this kind of thing ;)

Hi all!
I had posted this on another thread at DG and someone suggested Skopea Limani in Turkey and that it was near Greece. I have googled it but only found a few pics. The cliffs and ruins do look similar.

Anyone know Skopea Limani?

No don't know that Debbie but I think it's quite likely. Have you decided what the ladies are doing? Looks as if they are pullimg fruit or something off harvested plants. Not sure what - could be grapes?

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

We are still trying to figure that one out. It does appear to be some sort of assembly line for sorting/cleaning vegetables doesn't it? On the other thread they have come up with possible plants: potatoes, grapes, olives. Also, since it's a seaport maybe some type of seafood- sardines maybe.

I wish the pic were plainer.

Is that a harbour I can see on the right hand side just behind your father?

don't know if that would help in identification .

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

Yep, it's on the water.

Just a thought here, mine was that being, that next to water is it possibly sardines they are sorting?

Wallaby,
You are [I think] the 2nd person to suggest sardines and someone else had said mussels. I think y'all might be onto something!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

found a comprehensive site on the Turkish fishing industry, sardines feature strongly, but other sea foods too

well look what I found, a list of ports in Turkey, now all you need is pictures, that is if it is Turkey, by the dress of the women it is Mediterranean, now that is a thought, would turkish women then have been more covered up?

Taking a look at the women, they are of the short Italian type, the head scarf is typical, Cyprus could be a possibility. It has that type of cliffs
