With this warm weather, I find myself trying to figure out where everything I got late fall is going to go... But I know if I plant them now we are going to get hit with a hard freeze soon lol.
Who else is trying to figure out where to plant everything they got from the discount racks? What kinds of plans have you all come up with??
Where to put everything!
Check with your local extension agent for optimate planting time. January is the recommended planting time for fruit trees and other bare root plants, but potted plants should fare better.
I have planted some things in the last month or so, knowing that if we got hit w/ a hard freeze I would have to cover them up. So far, as you know, the weather has been mild and hopefully these plants are putting downs some roots. Others I have repotted and plant to plant in the spring.
That is good thinking April. That's what I'm about to do too lol. I so want to plant stuff!
I know, I can hardly keep from going to the nursery now that I have some free time since the holidays are over. I love to plant things!
It should be pretty safe to plant perennials, as even if we get more freezing temps, the ground doesn't freeze. As said before, just be sure to mulch, mulch, mulch! I dug up some nierembergias a little more than a month ago, to plant my poppies and delphiniums among the salvias in one bed. Today I planted them in their new, "last chance", spot. I also finally planted an Autumn aster I was given last April(!). If the weather holds out, I'll be moving some other stuff around tomorrow.
Remember that landscapers in TX find they can plant year-round. It's just that some times are better than others.
