Controversy re: watering Bromeliada

I just bought 3 beautiful Bromeliads and I got two opinions on watering.
The man who sold me one Guzmania said to water in the Cup.The man who sold me two other Guzmania's said only water the soil and no fertilizing. So, I ask the experts.thanks

I always water mine in the cup if possible. But, I am by no means an expert!

I don't specially water the soil, but I don't try to keep the water off the soil, either. The soil usually gets a little wet too!

I've read the roots are mainly to support the plant structurally, and the cup absorbs the water.
