Full Hard Drive

My computer hard drive is nearly full. I purchased an external drive to move my documents to. I thought it would be easy to just drag the documents from the c drive to the new external drive. Now, I am having second thoughts. Is it that easy, or do I need a software program to facilitate the transition?
