My grown niece lost her old friend on Wednesday

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I feel so badly for her. I remember when she first got Lucky. She had to have her long time companion Sootie put to sleep and her boyfriend , now her husband bought Lucky a dalmatian for her just about this time of year. That was 14 years ago. How time flies.
She had been sick and left work early. My sister baby sits their 2 year old so decided since Jolie was sick she would keep the baby until her husband got off work and could watch him.
It all worked out so well. She said had she not been sick and worked her regular hours she would have walked in with Grant in her arms to find Lucky dead.
This way she came home alone and Lucky was listless and she sat with him and comforted him and made an appointment at the Vet's for when her husband came home. She said she only left him a few minutes and when she returned he was dead already. She was so heart broken. I know how she is, a real pet lover. At least I know she spoiled him rotten. She said her other dog Max a Bishon Frise came in and whimpered and laid by him a while after he died.
When her son asked where Lucky was she explained he had gone up to heaven. He said "stars?" He can''t talk or say many words, and she said Yes.
I told her I would make her a memorial webpage. It is the only thing I can do from this distance. She lives in Illinois. Even though she is grown she is still my little niece to mel I gave her her first cat and dog years ago. Her Mom , my sister didn't even like animals and I wasn't sure how she would react to a dog much less a stray cat I found a couple years later and gave to her. LOL
Just thought I would mention this as it is so on my mind how she must be feeling now at this time of year. Knowing her I am sure she had already bought him presents and had them waiting for Christmas. She said he had just been to the Vet four days ago for a torn toenail and besides that he was fine. He was 14 years old, though so that is a long life for such a big dog.
