On our way to visit inlaws, we noticed this sign. It is posted in the Richland Chambers Reservoir, located near Fairfield, Texas (east Texas). I've seen "No Tresspassing", "Keep Out", "Private Property", but never FORBIDDEN. The childish side of me sure wanted to step in to see what would happen, but didn't.
Texas Oddities....but we LOVE our State
On a serious note, if you know the story behind this awkward language, please share with us.
Guess its a rougher threat than tresspassers will be composted huh? Guess since Texas is so big it takes all kinds. Was it government property maybe (Roswell sight #2 perhaps)? LOL
I was wondering if it's State property, too. The seal looks like the TX Forest Service seal. Forbidden is pretty strong language, I also had thoughts of Area 51. Hmmm, since TX can have it's own army, maybe we have our own Area 51? Or maybe it's protected habitat for BigFoot? Even if we don't know what it is, we can make up some Texas-sized story, lol!
:-)
I had a couple of interesting customers who used to come into the thrift store I was the assistant manager of in Ohio. They were sisters and they drove around in a van covered in antennae. One of my cashiers asked them once what they did with the truck and the sister at the register looked around, leaned closer, and said softly: "We're tracking Big Foot."
Dave, my cashier, said, "You're kidding, right?"
She said, "Oh, no. We have seen him often and we have proof that he is communication with the aliens." Then she left.
The next time they came in, they brought Dave a copy of a book they had self-published documenting the sightings of UFOs and Big Foot in Madison County, Ohio, and defending their theory that the two were in cahoots. Dave let me read it - it was hilarious! Full of really fuzzy black and white pictures and verbatim interviews with supposed witnesses in bars. They were quite serious about it all, though. LOL
I can't wait to hear what the Texas-sized version of the story is!!!
~ Marylyn
Marylyn if that happened in Oklahoma I would worry you had meet up with some of my family!
Hiya girls! There are several copies of this sign posted along the reservoir. Posted by Tarrant Regional Water District (Tarrant, as in Ft Worth, is who owns the property). And yes Mags, it makes me think we have our own Area 51 with mutant catfish or something, lol.
Marylyn that is funny!
Since it is in East Texas, I wonder if it might have to do with the space capsule explosion, if I remember correctly there were people hunting for debris all over that area of the state, and maybe they had to post those signs to stop the souvenier hunters, just a thought.
Josephine.
no, they have been there for a long time, it's just that I finally decided to stop and take a pic.
Here is a PDF file about the Reservoir. http://www.trwd.com/Documents/GENERAL%20ordinance.pdf go to page 9 and it has "forbidden zone."
Texas likes to use the word "forbidden" in lots of legal stuff.
I saw this a couple of months ago when I took the detour from I45. The TRWD is to build & maintain a wetlands on the land as part of a study. Let's hope that they see it works. Here's a link: http://www.trwd.com/Env_r-c_wetlands.asp
I stumbed into some website that had a sinopsis of a lawsuit against TRWD, where a farmer accused them of causing irreparable loss for not preventing floods (something like that). The plaintiff won 10 million, so I guess this convinced TRWD it needed to be more ecofriendly. I think this happened about 10 years ago.
Cala, I forgot that "forbidden" is a common Texan expression. Heck, I used it constantly with my stepchildren when they were growing up--but it NEVER worked, lol.
i thought i'd put up a sign that said "No Tresspassing, violaters will be prostituted!"
I thought that would keep them out for sure.
lol
ROFLOL I like that one. :-)
I used to have a sign that said "No Smoking - violators will be pummeled to unconsciousness with an organic carrot".
:-)
M, that is darling. where have you been, I have missed ya. Went gallivanting (again) today and spring/summer bulbs, roses, were everywhere!
Hey, Nery! Holidays, out of state for a week (in NM), then sick, they all took their toll. I'm feeling much better now, both physically and emotionally (my son and I went to visit family, FIL is ill with cancer and it has been quite sobering.) Thanks for noticing!
I've seen lots of new growth on plants when I pull back the mulch a bit. My poppies are blooming (Iceland, not the CA's) and the delphiniums are beginning to bud. Can you believe I have trailing lantana in bloom?!
I was thinking about you when we were driving back home last Saturday and passed Fairfield. I knew better than to even try to trespass at the reservoir, it's forbidden, lol!!
lol.
i posted elsewhere asking about your FIL. if you are not totally exhausted/overwhelmed by the subject and at your convenience, I would really like to know. My FIL had Chrons disease earlier in his life, has been in remission many years, but this Christmas we had a scare because he was in off/on pain and was passing blood. He had a thorough checkup and there is no cancer, not even an ulcer, which he is prone to.
Ah, I couldn't help but add a photo of a sign I took. Actually I was photographing a rare Gray Cracker butterfly that was perched on the fence post. Needless to say, I was about twelve feet away and didn't want to scare off the butterfly until I'd gotten at least one photo just to prove I'd seen it. It cooperated quite well moving over to a nearby telephone pole and I was able to get all the close-ups of it I wanted. I still think this first photo was cute.

Cat, that's such a neat picture! How nice of them to label the wildlife, lol. I just saw another post of yours with the recipe for butterfly bait. I copied it in my Garden Diary for future reference, will try it out!
Nery, I have a friend whose niece has suffered with Chrons disease all her life. My heart goes out to your father and your family, it is not a nice disease. I hope everything settles down for your father, that he will stay in remission.
Thanks for asking about my FIL. He does better, then not so much, then better again. It's the chemo that knocks him off his feet so badly. We have times when we think he's going to beat it, then we don't, then we do again. He had a good week this past week, and I pray that each week will be better than the last. He has chemo every other week, just had another session Thursday. So far he seems to have tolerated it a little better this time. Adam's and my visit over Christmas was such a sweet time with the whole family. It was the first time in 15 years that we were all there at once.
