I googled 'bamboo' and got 11 million hits. Wish I had more time....Anyway, does anyone know of a non-invasive (!!!) species that would grow here in the Hill Country? There are seemingly invasive types that grow in the ,uh, neglected part of town and in the creek beds. We would be looking for something more appropriate for a fence line--height is relatively immaterial. Our
soil is caliche, dry and rocky--the scientific name for it is "dirtis crappi", I think. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Chuck.
What kind of Bamboo to grow ?
Chuck,
I was at the Dallas Zoo a couple of months ago and they had several types. One in particular by their train loading area, was beautiful and did not look to be invasive as so many of the others did. Though I must admit it was very tall and probably 3-4" diameter.
Maybe you could call them. I keep saying I am going to one of these days.
Good luck on your search.
Dee
You might try googleing non-invasive bamboo I got alot of hits but Im really not sure what you are looking for. Good luck!
You want to look at the clumping bamboos, I went on the Dallas Zoo plant tour for teachers this Fall. All the Bamboos at the Dallas Zoo must be looked after and new shoots on most are kept clean out of areas they dont want the Bamboo every few weeks! They water a ton and use lots good stuff to help everything grow lush so their Bamboos might look nice and clean but truth be told they must keep them looking that way.
Good to meet you Chuck! A bunch of us were in your neck of the woods the second weekend in November, sorry we didn't get to meet you.
Ditto the clumping bamboo. That's what I always hear, is that the bamboo needs to be the clumping type. There's an excellent little nursery just outside Kerrville, on hwy 16 - Natives of Texas. They also sell non-natives, as long as they are things that will grow well in your area. Give them a call, I'm sure they can help you: 830-896-2169, http://www.nativesoftexas.com/ . Also, you could call your area extension office to see if they can recommend a specific clumping bamboo for your area.
Good luck!
A while back when I was hot to trot for bamboo I did a lot of googling and discovered that there are several places in Austin that sell bamboo of all kinds. They cater to the southern states and are strong competition to the Pacific NW growers.
