mats on Molly

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi,

Within the last week to two weeks, Molly, our long-haired white kitty, has suddenly gotten mats. I know it sounds crazy but before this her fur was perfect ... and now she's got dreadlocks!

At the same time, Tutty began losing weight. He's going to the vet but I'm wondering if the two things could be related as he used to groom her (enough that he had white hairballs) and maybe he stopped?

I don't know what to do! Anyone have any luck with de-matting a long hair? I will ask the vet about doing it but I think if he would give me some kitty tranquilizers I could do it myself and traumatize her less than getting her into the cat carrier, out in the cold, in the car, to the vet or groomer, have her groomed (probably shaved or clippered), back in the carrier, back in the car, etc. etc.

I have the skills to get them out just not the ability to fight with her as she is persnickety about herself and rarely lets me do more than pet her under the chin (ah, rescues with issues! I have a house full of them)...

your thoughts/assistance?

Thanks!
Love
Janie
