Hello there,
I have a Alocasia Amazonica for the past few months now. And for the past few weeks, the leaves are slowly turning color (yellow/orange) and dying (one at the time).
Is it normal at this time of the year. (the days being so short)
Or should I be worried. I don't water it very often, it's not in a direct sunlight, but in a room with big south and west windows.
Thank You
Alocasia Amazonica loosing it's leaves.
Mine is doing the same thing so I wonder if it is a seasonal thing. Mine lived outside from May - early October. I have a few other Alocasias and when they're inside, they'll lose a leaf around the same time as it puts out a new one. Maybe some of the experts will chime in here.
BWilliams will be the man to ask...he's a guru on the topic of alocasia, colocasia, and canna.....
Mine are doing the same thing, so I'm thinking it's slightly seasonal?
I'm zone 9b, and we've been in the 45L/65-70h temp range lately...

Well Alocasias like amazonica have roots in areas like sumatra and borneo these type areas were it is very very tropical. They do how ever have a bit of a season. This time of the year you can see some slow growth and some leaves being lost but you should also have leaves forming or staying. If your losing them all your plant maybe in very bad shape. Alocasias do not like to go dormant completely like colocasias and other aroids. I suggest the following look for bugs under the leaf this can cause lose of leaves. Do not water unless needed this usually means let the plant get bone dry then soak it and then bone dry again. Alocasias do not like sitting in water. Another thing is tempatures 50f is not good for a alocasia like amazonica it likes it between 70 and 85f this includes its root system and soil. A lot of times people put them by windows were the soil drops down very cold. This can cause it to rot as well. If non of these are the factor I would say it's just slowing down for the season and should regain its strength in the spring. In the spring after 3 or so good leaves begin to fertilize the plant many times the soil alocasias are grown in have just a little fertilizer and need to be put back in the soil each year. Good luck if you have pics I maybe able to help more. THANKS
Thank You for your help, I will have a look for bugs...
My little one only had 3 leaves and 2 of them died. Now I have 1 lone leaf holding on. How often do they put up new leaves? I have mine inside under lights, the temp stays around 65.
sounds bad did the last leaves rot off? Was the stems really liquidy? If so your looking at a major problem. A picture may help me see what is wrong. To much water can be one your temp sounds about right but if you have a way to keep it warmer it may help. If you think your going to lose it their is something you can do. It is take the plant and put it in a plastic bag with a few wooden stakes in the pot to hold the bag up put a few spoon full of water in the bag and place it in a warm bright area. It should steam up. This usually brings the plants back to life if they are on the brink. Just make sure no rot is present before you do this or fungus can grow in it also. Check the bag every so often to let the air change out and you should notice some growth. I have also added root hormone to this with good luck in saving some thought to be dead plants.
Thanks Brian, I think the last leaf to fall over was mushy at the soil line. I'm at work now and can't post a photo until this evening but I will then. My upstairs room is warmer than my downstairs room, maybe I should move it up there.
