New dark colocasia

Louisville, KY

This is a new colocasia. The leaves are a dark grayish green in color not black but darker than most. The stems are a bright light pink color with some white. This is a pretty new addition to my growing collection of colocasias. This is a mutation off of some of one of my plants and I have yet to put a name to this one.

My first thought, was I looking at an x-ray of a leaf!!!
Veins being the skeleton of the bones of the leaf!

Brian, this newbie is quite interesting...the pink stems with a darker leaf than the other pink stems, is a great combo!

Your pic is Xanthosoma Atroverins. Also known here as Blue giant. It can get pretty big in a tropical climate and has a bluish green look to it. I have seen it 8ft tall with leaves as big as car hoods.

Brian, that is what I am looking for....will it take sun? Hurricane Wilma did a number on my shade and I was thinking of putting some of these in because I was under the assumption that they grow fast. But I am concerned about the FL sun. What do you think or maybe even suggest?

These Xanthosomas do very well in south Florida. I am not sure if they can take the full sun but do better under some filtered light or part shade. Sagittifolum is another species it could possible take a bit more sun and also gets really large but both can be a bit of a weed. Best to keep the smaller plants off. Colocasia gigantea i have seen some nice plants of it also in that area.

Thanks. I will keep my out for them.
