well, what the hurricanes didn't wipe out these guys will!
We had a very sick water oak tree that needed to come down. We were lucky it didn't fall on the house this hurricane season. I loved this tree. It was home to so many birds and other wildlife. It also protected my shade growing gingers and all my rare tropicals that I've collected over the years. They are all getting smashed!. As I look out the window I am watching huge limbs fall and crush my plants. The guys cutting down the tree are showing no mercy. I don't think I'll look outside until its over...ah well, it is only plants right...?
boohoo my gardens!
I am going back to my holiday baking and ignoring the chainsaw.....egads! the crashing noise...
Lisa, how can you stand it? Ouch, the noise of chain saws. Maybe some of those cookies call for brandy and you could take a little nip to help you cope!
Barbara
I hate to hear about you loosing that tree.
Are Water Oaks fast growers?
Or would you really want another big tree that close to the house?
Ric
well, it is all over :( yes, there are many plants under the heap.
BDunn, I couldn't stand it...oh the horror! when I heard the second worker start up his chain saw, I cranked up the Christmas music..(didn't help)
Ric,
Water Oaks are moderate growers. This one was around 35-40 years old. Makes me really sad that it had to go. If we were going to stay living here, I'd plant nice size Canary Island Palm (My most favorite palm) But, since we will be leaving here, I don't know yet what we are going to put in it's place. It looks so neck-id out there :(
Lisa, was that the big oak beside your kitchen door?
yes suzie, that is the one. that big beautiful oak(well, it was beautiful back then)...sniff...I tried to save it..honest. I had the county agent visit me at the end of spring this year. He told me it needed to come down. I refused to believe him. I called out a tree dr. and he also told me it was over with...waaaahhh. I miss my tree already..sniff.
I have a feeling of what you are going through Lisa....I was sick at what Wilma did to my garden but then the repair men and estimators came and what Wilma didn't kill they worked on. I still have several more people to come. I'm thinking Uzi? AK-?? what ever it is? that will work. Take care.
Hap
Lisa, I am just SO SO sorry. I've still got those plumies here waiting for you. Just say the word. I would sure feel better. I promise you can take them where ever you move and they'll do fine and you'll be able to at least pretend you're in the tropics.
Kay
Ohhhh, I can so completely sympathize with you. My water oak took out the chimney and then caught on the ridgeboard of the house. Then the men came with a huge crane...and a bobcat...and saws...and just demolished everything that had survived the storm. Are you leaving Louisiana? Are you from here originally?
Kay, its alright, I'm good for right now.
NematanthusNut, I was born and rasied here. In fact, I live about 10 minutes from where I was born. Never lived anywhere else. I'm ready for a change. Trading hills for swamps isn't a bad idea since Terrebonne Parish is sinking anyway.. :-) I've had enough of hurricanes to last me a life time. I'm packing up my Community Coffee, Bourgeios Aundioulle Sausages and my seafood ...... We're outta here as soon as we can :) Yeah, I gonna miss home, but I can visit.
I'm new to this thread....where are you going, Lisa?
Hap
Hap,
If all goes well, Kentucky will be my new home state. We close the deal on some property on the 29th of this month. I can't wait to make an "official" newsflash..;0). We will have to build, so I'm thinking the move will be at some point this summer.
We are buying 8 acres in Western KY. There, I can live out my life long dream of being a hermit...LOL!
That sounds great, Lisa....I really don't blame you. Hurricanes are the pits. Wilma is my first Real exposure, (have had some heavy winds from others but not the devastation) and I hope she is the last. I can't even imagine what you went though. I remember the night that Katrina hit, I was worried sick about you and Ham-bone. I was so relieved when I saw your first post. What a nightmare....
Hap
Hap,
Thanks for the heart warming remarks :-).
It is not so much the actual landfall (well, yeah it is) but it is also the mental part..just watching those things churn in the Gulf for days on end..wondering and waiting..if it is going to be your hometown that gets the bullet. It does so much to the mind..lol. I'm still edgy when we get a little bit rain & wind...Watching hurricanes in the gulf leaves you wondering if it going to hit you, wondering if you need to pack up and leave..wondering how you are going to take all the critters...the whole nine yards. I've had enough already..lol..so have the members here at DG who have been riding out these storms with me since 2001! Most of the old timers here at DG are happy to see me move on, that is one less person they need to worry about! :)
You are SOOOOooo right about that.....Happy trails....
Western KY eh?
Well we will ceratinly welcome you up this way w/ open arms.......
and Trunks!
Aroids of yours are all over this area.
I'm sure we can find you an Oak or two also!
In fact I got pots full......pesky squirrels! lol
Ric
