I also grow orchids..so I have a small sprayer to mist my orchids.
I also use this sprayer, on stream, to top water some of my violets..It works great! and makes it easy to get under the leaves :)
A helpful hint for top watering
I do the same. Works well for small pots.
Yes, even when you use other watering methods, it's necessary to water from the top from time to time.... if the soil has dried out completely, your wick or your self watering pot won't draw water until the soil has been moistened a little by top watering.
What kind of sprayer do you have, Lorry? My poor remaining orchids could use some TLC.... I know this isn't meant to be an orchid thread, but I only recently found out that their bulbous base parts might be looking shriveled from too much water rather than too little as I'd been thinking.... oops. I guess that's like when African Violets get droopy.... it could be from being too dry, but it also could be from being too wet!
Uhm I bought it at Home depot..it is just a lil 32 oz hang sprayer!
I paid 6.00 for it..
For orchids....depends on what variety but rule of thumb....spray them in the AMs ...how often depends on the medium they are in....make sure to mist them well but leave time for them to dry out before the sun sets.
Here is a picture of my orchid stand....They just LOVE to be misted every day but they are attached to wood :)
I can check on the name of the sprayer if you wish.
For the violets..I put it on stream...and I put the nozzle under the foliage...I used to drip using a watering can but this helps IMMENSELY :)
for orchids..you use the mist setting :)
Well thought my idea was original :)
Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone!
You are all awesome :)
Gorgeous, Lorry!!
I thought you had a fancy gizmo... but I guess you're using one of the standard plastic spray bottles with the nozzle set to squirt rather than to mist... I can do that! LOL
I like you orchid stand. What it the variegated plant in the lower right corner?
oh! oh! I know that one (I think)... it's a Bromiliad!
Do I get a star, or did I flunk?
Of course, I have no idea what *kind* of bromiliad....
Right..no fancy get up a simple plastic bottle type :)
6.00 a HD :)
I am sure you will LOVE it
Kath..that is a bromeliad..the bottom of the stand has mostly bromeliads!
The plant itself is an old parrot perch I had laying around
I'D Like to get this watering system

I have threatened to put a long hose on the sink sprayer so I can water the plants in the morning room....
I've also considered putting an adaptor on an inside faucet (the mudroom sink might be close enough) so I can hook up one of my beloved 50 ft. coil hoses on "watering day." I suppose I could even hook up the miracle gro sprayer to it, if I were inclined.... but I don't fertilize much during the winter, since I'd rather encourage new growth in spring. (For most of my plants, fertilizing in winter seems to result in new growth, but it's seldom very vigorous growth because of limited winter light.... except for the scented geraniums, which I also do not fertilize because I can barely keep them pruned back into bounds as it is!)
