I just lost my MM, bummer! It never really took off. It was from Logees, which is hit and miss.

Hear, hear on the h&m of Logee's. And, ok.....ok......I'm off to do some slicin' and dicin' of the MM. ;-) And, hey--my greenhouse pal came over last night and took your big 'Poponeii' rhizome home to his heat mat to "babysit" for us. He asked if it'd be "ok" to ready it for you w/a bit of new growth? "Umm......are you SERIOUS?!" lol

Laurie, I lost my MM from Logees 3 years ago from over watering. I bought another one from them this spring and lost it due to over fertilizing it (my fault). So I ordered 2 more this fall. Both went into quick decline so I harvested two big leaves and water rooted these. Also it is amazing that the two plants I received from them were different sizes (one large and one small) but at the same price. That just doesn't make sense.

I also have one small rhizome tip in the aquarium surrounded by damp sphagnum moss. It seems to be okay. Any leaves I tried to root in medium quickly rotted.

Here is a picture of my water rooted leaves with babies (in water no less).

COOL!

way to go Butch! I'm not having any luck with my 'rhizo in water' cuttings, they just rot from the cut end. Any advise?

I would not water root rhizos, just leaves or canes. I'm not sure which rhizo you are rooting either. Most take fairly easy by wiggling it into some good medium (like bearded iris - top half exposed and bottom half buried), keeping moist and maybe providing humidity. You can also stick the rhizome straight up in the medium as well (works well for rexes and upright stems) as long as you don't bury it too deep. Horizontal rhizomes planted this way should have the bottom leaves removed. My Snoopy rhizomes don't seem to like any way for rooting. For this plant I use leaf cuttings in quite dry medium since they tend to rot easily in any moist conditions.

what I meant was that I took a cutting, petiole and leaf, with the petiole about 8" long and put in the bubbler but the ends are rotting. I didn't put any part of the actual rhizome, just petiole. Seems like what you did above?

Eight inches for a petiole seems a bit long. Mine are no longer than two inches. Even if you put it in soil, most advice is to cut it fairly short. Mine also have been sitting in water for 4 to 6 weeks now.

what did you use, like a little glad ware container?

Plastic cup - about 8 oz. Changed the water every few days. Probably should change more often but it was usually clear.
