We had a bumper crop at work this year. Many new colors and kinds, hard to pick a favorite.Thought I'd share some varieties. This is "Prestige Red"
Poinsettias, the plant of many colors..
amazing what they've done with Poinsettias isn't it! I look forward to the new colors every year. Nice pictures Kyle! How are you doing these days?
Pretty amazing what they can do. Breeding holds the key to a lot of neat stuff. I hope you have some good cannas coming along?
Those are so beautiful. With Christmas almost here, can anyone give tips/advice for growing a poinsietta outside? I know they can only survive in certain zones. Another DGer has one outside in Zone 8B.
Those are so lovely and so nice for you to share different ones.
Barbara
Most Poinsettia have been force grown.
Palnts on steriods so to speak.
Dump the 'soil' it isn't soil.
Repot in good free draining potting soil.
Trim the plant WAY back. Watch the sap if you're latex sensitive.
Grow very high light.
It will probably drop every leaf that it originally had.
Don't worry it's natural.
Water moderately let dry between waterings.
Ric
Kyle, those are beautiful. By the way, congrats on 'Inca Sun'.
Linda ..Thanks!
A couple additions to Henry's recommendations, which were all very good. The plant can be trimmed back at any point, up until about June 1st. At that time, if you want a similar plant to what you purchased, let it grow out until about mid August. In August, cut the tips off of each bract, or at least the upper most ones, to encourage branching, and a fuller plant for the holidays.
Though high light is recommended overall, you'll want to watch for outside light sources such as street lamps, porch lights etc. These are day length sensitive, and outside light sources could delay the bracts from changing until well after the holidays.

They are all beautiful, but I really like Monet' Twilight. You are so lucky to be able to work around beautiful flowers all the time.
They are all beautiful but Christmas Rose Marble was less attractive than the rest. I loved looking at all of them. I usually have several Poinsettias on my front steps but this year we have a new puppy so there will be no plants within his range.
Afraid of the puppy tearing plants up or eating them?
Poinsettia are not poisonous.

Anyone seen the dyed ones yet?
They have blue ones at Lowes.
Yuch!
Ric
Ric, I saw them. Aren't they AWFUL!! My Walmart had blue, purple and hot pink, sprinkled with glitter. They looked like they had been spray painted.
They had those and paint splattered ones. LOL
Like gluing straw flowers on Cactus...not for me...
Ric
You are right, the poinsettias are not poisonous (although the sap is an irritant). My puppy is only 12 weeks today and I am not confident he could be trained at this point not to tear up a plant. I'll not push my luck this year and I'll buy twice as many Freedon Salmons next year. LOL
WOW, those are beautiful... Last year I dodn't know the color range extended beyond red, pink, and white... now they have yellow, salmons, bi-colors, varriegated ones, purple etc....
as to the dyed ones.... ickkkkk, they're so pretty without dye, why put that yuck on them??
Thanks for the pics!

There are many more varieties then these, over 40 kinds all together from Ecke the main grower in Calif. we order cuttings then grow them on from June 15th on. Next year we are trying to train some in hanging baskets, and do some large standards.Fun to experiment. ;-)
How are you controlling the flowering?
Light duration or temps?
Ric
both.
I just love poinsettias. So cheerful. Every year I await the new ones. This year I didn't see any new varieties around. I should google for pics. I will have to watch for your Cranberry Punch Kyle. I just love them all!
With all the fancy colors now that are not Christmasey at all, I wonder why we do not see them for a longer period in stores. They are so colorful.
This may be a new one this year.
Kell take a trip to Encinitas in Ca. and see where they come from. :-)
I really should, Kyle. I would so enjoy it. I never seem to go anywhere. Too many pets and plants to leave home for long.
kell, why do you think I don't get to Calif or anywhere anymore..same affliction..too many pets and plants...but I have started to remedy that problem. Down sizing..
:-)
Kyle, we did the standards one year, seems like we had to start those way early. We always did hanging baskets. We used the baskets that snapped apart with holes in the sides for plants. They finished looking like a big ball of color.
The last year we grew poinsettias we grew red and pink Christmas Rose. I hated those plants, they would break at the slightest touch.
We always searched out Ecke at the trade shows, just to see what new colors they'd come up with!
I'll start some early Cala for standards think I will use Salmon Freedom, seems to have strong stems, anda good Red variety. I have to get some of the hanging baskets will the side holes I had forgot about those. :-)
Those baskets sound like fun to plant other things in also. What are they called? Maybe I can find a few online.
okay! I admit it I went alittle greedy and snatched up four of them at the grocery store ,(but they were calling me, poor things! ) some over watered and some under watered ya know the story I'm sure.As I gave my DH the explanation over my shoulder "these things will grow here ya know?" sssso now I gotta make them, yup he'll be watching ! awhh! what ta heck for a buck .98 , right? so plant em in the ground or not? hold em over tell spring in the house ( I've watched my mom's die a slow death that way)hopefully it's not hereditary ,and i love these flowers so much. But should i love them from afar? I'd really like to enjoy them , in my yard, every year ,not just at christmass time at the stores . I have a red , a salomon color, and two white ones . it never occuered to me steroids could be used in the process , with any plant.( commercial flowers) what a ditz huh?(reference to my self of course) not you. I know they use that stuff in(on)our vegtables....animal feed ...where ever they can throw the stuff in..
At church, we have a large circular planting bed enclosed with a curb. There's a flag pole in the center. This Christmas, red poinsettias and pale yellow poinsettias were planted in curved rows so that the whole circle appeared to be a giant peppermint candy.
Fireant that sounds awesome..
I love your 'Monet Twilight!' wow
