Smootch Me!

What do you make of this fused leaf on 'Smootch Me'? I've seen this once on my begonia epipsela (or was it sanguinea) any way, what causes this, and better yet, what will happen if you use it for a cutting?

That's really unusual!

I would guess that it is a mechanical rather than genetic accident during leaf formation (in which case a cutting from that leaf would be like a cutting from any other leaf), but I don't know.

Fascinating!

I would agree with critter....But it is hard to say!
I have had this happen on my music box dancer once though :)
The plant is still quite healthy though :)
The plant is lovely though :)
I don't have that one *hint hint*
Lots of luck with it!

Cool. I'd try growing babies from it for the fun of it :)) I'm sure what Critter said . It is fascinating as I like different things. I don't think I've ever seen one. Allison

Well, Allison, since you're the official 'mom' to it, I'll take a cutting and see what we get. If it grows true to this form, I'll ship it back to you (minus a leaf) and see what you can do with it!

I can't remember why the begonia leaf like this died, but it was from a cane/shrub type and they (like hoya) dont propagate from leaf. Well, they root, but it can take years for any results if any. AlohaHoya said she had a rooted hoya leaf for 3 years before finally tossing it out.

Nice that AV's aren't like that!

Oh no need to ship it back Smooch Me is a beautiful Av with gorgeous blossoms. There's nothing wrong with the plant.
you don't like her ?

No, I meant that if I take a cutting and the new babies all have fused leaves like this, that I'd ship you back a baby with fused leaves.

Like her? I LOVE her! I love all my babies and I'm trying to get so that I recognize them by leaf/flower without having to look at the tag.

Never seen one like that before. Very interesting.
