Puff Pastry Cheese Straw Makeover Needed

Decatur, GA(Zone 7a)

My dd is having a Christmas party next week and I thought cheese straws would be a great idea. I got this recipe out of the paper and we made them this afternoon. They were so bland that my dd ate only half of one. This is the build up from the paper:

"Not only does the intoxicating aroma of these goodies overwhelm guests duing baking, but their cheese, buttery taste is hard to beat for the small amount of work involved." Boring is what we said. Here is the recipe. Will you guys give me some tips for improvement?

1 sheet frozen puff pastry, room temp
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, or shredded Asiago, cheddar, or Gryere cheese (we used Parmesan)
Kosher or sea salt
freshly ground pepper

Basically, you just spread out the pastry to a 14x10 sheet, cut in half lengthwise, coat with egg, put on the cheese, cover with the other half sheet, twist, cover that with egg, and bake 10 minutes.

They turned out well, and they did look nice, just didn't have much flavor. My dh says to add lots of minced garlic. I'm thinking that would be too overwhelming. Any advice?

Next we are going to try Sausage Balls. The only recipe I've found is with Bisquick. Anything better?
