Work in progress

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Well it was time I wanted to share a few pictures of our homemade greenhouse..It was a combination of my truck driving son who bought most of the materials for me for my birthday and my wonderful hubby who is building it for me..
Limited on space since so much of our yard is down hill and not much flat land to work it ended up about 8.5 X 8.5 in size and he built my little sink area with a counter top a friend of ours was getting rid of.
We started it on 11-13 and the weather has not been on our side from the start, we had a few good days in the beginning but then it turned so cold and rainy that it has taken longer than we had hoped..
I painted the wood black hoping I was not messing up but thought maybe it would hold more heat in.
Here are the first set of pictures from beginning to framing and most of the poly on, we used 6 mil but that has been the hardest in getting a tight seal all over with just the two of us, we really should have brought in help but when we had a little break in the weather we would do a little more..

Here is the sink area he built, he put up a florescent light and hopefully this weekend we can get the brick down on the floor and the rest of the sheeting tacked down on the side wall.

Just about finished..
I could not be happier and I know it is going to fill up fast but hopefully I can utilize the space..
I have the heater ready, and fan so maybe I can make my plants happy but this is a work in progress and I am still not sure what I am doing so any advice anyone can give will be appreciated...
Thanks
Vickie

Your DH did a wonderful job Vickie. It looks strong and very well built.
Congrats on your new GH. I'm sure it will give you many years of enjoyment.

Very nice job!
Love that Granite work station!
What a classy looking piece!

I put a large plastic container under our sink.
That way I can pot in the sink and just sweep the dirt down the drain into it.

You aren't kidding about the lack of flat land.
My G-Mother used to say their cows had legs shorter on one side so the could graze on the hills.......Now I know where they came from ;-)

Thanks you all, yes my DH is very particular in his work so much of a perfectionist so I guess thats why he is so good at his work working. This little greenhouse isn't going anywhere, he built it very strong.
Ric I lived in Texas 18 years and everything is flat and I had always wanted some rolling hills but moving here that is all we have but the view especially in the fall and winter of the mountains is just beautiful..But trying to landscape on a hill or try to dig out a flat piece like we did for the dog pin, and our garden was a chore in itself, especially with this terrible red clay we have.
Here is a picture when we were digging out the garden last spring and I am hoping to landscape most of the hillside so I don't have to watch my DH move sitting sideways on the hill, it is such a site..

Yesterday was the day I placed a few of my tropical, cuttings and Brugs out in the greenhouse and here is a collage of the inside. Today I am going to pot up a few of my brug cutting.

Ah the infamous Georgia red clay!
12" down we've got the gray stuff.
Yuck!!

I really like the inside view.
Can't wait to see it filled up.

I did get a chuckle at the fan shot though.
Yesterday we went Christmas shopping.
I've been looking for a fan for a few weeks now.
(WRONG time of year)
Found a two pack of them at Big Lots.
Small 8" fans w/...........a radio built in.
I couldn't figure why anyone would want a radio in a fan.
Now I know :-)

I hate this red clay it gets all over everything and you can't hardly wash it out, but the brick floor we put down seems to be doing pretty good and still filling in with sand but still have a little tweaking to do on the temps./humidity controls..
I am going to move the smaller fans in that will hang, my hubby brought that one in for the time being and put me a radio out there so I can have some music..
But I love it, and have all my brug cuttings potted now and we will see how they do in the next little bit.

Your Brug cuttings are going to love it in there.

Our Brugs from last Summer are now setting flower buds again.
I was pretty shocked.
We have no supplemental lighting and temps have ranged from 40 to 70 in our hoop.
The cuttings are throwing leaves pretty regularly now.

That is exciting Ric, I had kept the cutting in jars and now are potted up and already a couple have quite a few leaves growing and I can not wait till I have my first bloom. I did get one bud in the fall but it was just too late and fell of after I brought them in. I am still having a little trouble keeping the night temps. above 45, so I am going to need a better heating system but the GH seems to be doing just fine during the day..I was a little nervous with the little cutting out there and not sure what is the lowest temp they can take so just to be on the save side till the night time lows are better and I get a new heater this weekend, I have brought them in for a few nights..

I started w/ Agave, Cactus, and Sedum in ours.
Plants that I knew could take the cold/hot cycle.
Then as I figured the minimum temps worked my way into the less hardy plants.
The first year I waited till March to take the Brug cuttings out.
The established ones are tougher.
Do you have a Max/Min Thermometer?
It really helps.
