Got my new hoyas (three of them supersized!) from Aloha Hoya, and wanted to share 'cuz I'm SOOO excited!! I got Ruthie, Coronaria, Imperialis (WITH BUDS!!), Obscura, Albiflora and Cembra! Woohoo and Happy Dance to the max! Carol found a way to ship safely to me in freezing cold Illinois, and all arrived safe and beautiful! Couldn't have arrived at a better time - yesterday my DH was hit by a car - is ok, with only a broken leg, scraps and bruises, but is home and in good spirits. Will see an ortho guy Monday to find out if surgery will be necessary, but, gratefully, he is ok. Very thankful. Hoyas arriving today was a GREAT stress reliever for me, and made my husband laugh ("More plants, Karen? Just exactly HOW addicted to these are you??"). Should I tell him I placed a "winter special" order, too??? Happy dance, Happy dance!!
Happy Dance!
Those are really nice looking!! Hope your husband doesn't hurt too much!! I'm getting ready to do a winter special order.......Will have to get it in soon too!
Plants always relieve stress!! Think thats why we order so much LOL....yes I think thats it..... to get rid of Stress .......:-)
Dianne
What a great shipment of healthy hoyas! I'm very glad that your DH is okay! Was he driving or walking when this happened?
Woohoo Karen we want to see pictures of the "happy dance". I'm so glad your husband didn't get hurt anymore than he did. We can always get more plants, but not "wonderful husbands". Your plants are awesome!!.
Blessings,
Awanda
Awesome, what a great group of hoyas you ordered. Sorry to hear about hubby. They say holidays are hard, but dangerous, geesh!! Glad they arrived safely. Can't wait to see some blooms-Heather
Thanks for all your kind thoughts! He remains immobile but in very good spirits! It was a cold and snowy day here....long story short, he swirved to miss another car that had skidded, and landed up on the median. Got out of the car 'cuz he thought he was safe being on the median, picked up his hubcap, and the next thing he knew, he was rolling across the hood of a car. He never saw the car coming. Then, poor guy, was limping on broken leg, waiting for ambulance, and ANOTHER car comes along and side swipes his car on the other side! He must have had a target painted on it! Car is totaled, husband is safe and home with me, no one else hurt, and I have new hoyas - life is good!
Karen, tell you husband I kind of know how he is feeling!!! Also CONGRATULATIONS!!! You must have done a seriously long happy dance! Naturally, I am such a envious pig, I just e-mailed Carol to see if she had another imperialis with buds on it so I could have one too.
Enjoy.

Kabob:
Boy, some sister YOU are! Considering everything you've got going on right now.....out of the goodness in my heart, I offered to go pick your Hoyas up at the post office and bring them home with me until the roads clear up (for those of you who don't know, she lives waaay out in the boonies, we have 6" of snow ...AND her poor husband is home with his leg immobile) BUT DID SHE ACCEPT MY MOST GRAAAAACIOUS OFFER? NO!!!!! She mumbled something about never seeing them again. *HUH* I wonder what THAT'S suppose to mean?!?!
.....but dang, they ARE PEEERRRTTTTY!!!! AAAANNND, I GET CUTTINGS! whoo hoo!
Can't WAIT to see that bloom!!
And this is another shelving unit - in the bedroom! As sis Betsy posted on another thread, we had to empty our greenhouse - couldn't get the heat situation right (still working on that). So, I've got three of these units plus a hoya hut in my house. Anyway, this one holds most of my other hoyas - the ones that are hanging.
P.S. Sure, Betsy....I believed you (laughing up sleeve).....thanks for the offer, though!!!
P.P.S. Ann - I meant to ask earlier - how are you doing??? Are you catching up with dissertation - and other - things??
Wow, that is fantastic! The roasting pans are such a good idea! You have pebbles in them with water? Or how do you keep up the humidity? I know it's been asked before....Are those shelves 48"?
Heather
Whoa, what a bummer with DH getting creamed by a car!!! Good thing he has a good 'tude...tell him that hoyas in a house increase healing!!! Give him our love!!!
Carol
The shelves are 48" wide, so the "shop lights" fit perfectly on them! The whole unit sits over a heating vent, so the pans have water in them - hadn't thought of the pebbles, but thanks for the tip!!! Between the vent and the water, everything seems to stay pretty humid and ok. I've meant to ask this before - is there some kind of gauge that shows humidity levels? Where could I get one? I also had the pans because I'm a messy waterer!! And, thanks again for everyone's kind wishes for DH - he is a trooper!
Karen, I am sort of caught up. My shoulder still hurts alot and I have to go to physical therapy twice a week for it (plus exercises each day). Although, I am not going to complain so much seeing as how your DH is out of commission and far worse off than me (which means, of course, your workload has probably increased exponentially...). Thanks for asking!!!
Ann
Glad you're catching up, Ann! So, what is your dissertation covering? Hoyas???!!! No, seriously....whatcha working on?
I've been so self indulged I missed this whole post. Karen so sorry to hear of your husbands accident. Glad to here he is doing good and will be fine. Lets hope he doesn't have to have surgery.
Betsy.. She loves ya girl, it's just a Hoya thing...
I don't let my sister near my Hoya's either. She watched them for me once while we were on vacation, and helped herself to cuttings. She took cuttings of the stems that had all the peduncles!!! When I order Hoya's for her from Carol, I have Carol send hers in her own box so she can't get close to mine. I love her to death, but I have to draw the line some where. I even follow her around my house when she's checking out blooms.
Your plant shelves look great.
Tami, I LMBO when I read your post! You are SO right!
Karen, hugs (of the motherly kind) to your DH and best wishes for a speedy recovery. And hugs of the empathetic kind to YOU for dealing with an injured man.. bless your heart.
I can see now that I am in serious need of a unit like the one in your first pic. That is N I C E !!!!
Bets dear, we know you were just trying to be a good sis by offering to get them for her.. and take care of them for her.. and propagate them for her.. and, well.. be a good sis! ;~)
Barb
Karen (sorry it took so long to reply...), my dissertation is on media presentation of war and occupation. I am looking at the New York Times and the Washington Post news articles to see what kinds of sources (i.e. people they quoted) they used, what ideological position the sources took, if the sources were elites (i.e. high-up muckedy-mucks in our society) what kind of ageements/disagreements they were having with each other, whether what was being reported in a positive or negative light was on par with public opinion polls, etc. The time frame I am looking at for this will be from the "Mission Accomplished" date (May 2003) forward. I think (hope) it will be interesting and useful to people outside of the "ivory tower".
Ann - "Spin" fascinates (read as infuriates) me, not that I'm intelligent enough to always pick it up! Clearly, media influence is something we should all consider, whether conservative or liberal, as we make political, as well as philosophical, decisions and choices. What an interesting investigation - yes, it will be useful to those of us outside the "ivory tower!!!" Karen
