I have started about 100 leaves from my plants last night.
I did most of my minis and some of the standards.
So if anyone is interested in anything I have...send me your wish lists!!
*Laugh* I want to make sure I have enough to go around!
I am also wondering if anyone is interested in epescia? I have pink panther, tiger stripe available in stolon which are growing quite nicely :)
Talk to you all soon!
Lorry
Started some leaves
Good luck with all your babies. Do you have light stands for all your leaves and so many beautiful plants ? Give them as much indirect light you can 12-16 hours a day. Keep those leaves/babies warm :))
I don't know how it is where you live but this week our lows will be in the 40's high around 68 .
Allison
WOW!! I think I've got about 70 leaf pots at present, plus some little plantlets and suckers that are rooting... I need to go through them and note which ones I've put down leaves for, and which plants need to "donate" a leaf or two yet!
I've got to post a list of my varieties, too.... May as well put people's names right on the plantlets that they'd like this spring!
I'll sure be Dmailing you.... :-D
Gosh I guess I may have to make a list of babies growing :)) I have several set a side for MsC , and Jill, oh yes who wanted the Irish flirt ? Nanna ? Well everyone that I said I have names on yours.
I have about 200 leaves down. Plus about 50 with babies coming up, and several dozens or more new baby plants. Which reminds me I need to do some transplanting :))
Happy growing Allison
OH one thing nice most leaves will give you a few to several babies so more than one person can wish for it ! I always put a few of each down also.
Allison, any way you'll post some photos of all your babies? (you too Lorry and Jill - it is Jill isn't it Critter?) sorry I can't seem to remember!
L
Yep, Jill = Critter!
I was going to wait for "ears" on those new ones, but I'll head downstairs with the camera this weekend and see who is looking photo-worthy! :-)
Well all my babies. lol I had posted some older pictures. But I use a throw away camera and I have two full now of blooms that need developing. My husband is so busy ( and his health is not good) He gets up 4:30 am each morn works part time. I van't do anything. He has to shop, clean, do laundry, take out the dog , everything I need he has to do and get for me and I mean everything.
If my Hospice volunteer comes Monday I'll see if she an drop them off. One think I can not get close ups of good quality :(( Oh I will have to get another camera get some baby pictures but I can't take hundreds lol
Hi guys :)
I am FINALLY back :)
And I have them protected in a mini greenhouse in my back yard..so that is how they get their light :)
I will need all the luck I can get though :) Planting babies is new to me .. :)
Cool :) Can't wait to hear from you Critter. :)
I also need any special requests..to make sure I have enough up :)
I like the idea of putting the person's name right on it! Thanks for the suggestion!
Lorry
Your African violet leaves are in the back yard ? Is it enclosed Greenhouse that you walk into and is heated ? Is it free of insects ?
allison
So Allison, how many rooms in your home are dedicated to growing leaves? Do you have a bedroom that is dedicated to AV's only? I imagine in a single wide with hundreds of leaves down, you have a house full of babies!
Your DH must be a doll! Hugs to him! Mine got major points today for the kayak trip!
Hey Lorry!!!
I put my leaves and cuttings in my little green house in the back yard in the spring after the weather changes. They stay there until the summer heat comes. It is wonderful for setting leaves and watching those little ears come up. The love the morning filtered sun.
Really WOW :)) You put your African violet leaves out there ? Is it one with a floor then you can walk into. ? Is it warm enough in the Spring I guess the warm sun keeps heat in the greenhouses ? I never had one .
Are they isolated from other plants that have been out doors and protected against insects ? Thanks , Allison
No Our other home had an extra bedroom and larger glassed in garden room with mini green houses and 8 large windows with wood shelves my husband put up under the windows painted to match the room. And my plant stand were in the back room/computer room/ We moved down the street sold that home got this one real cheapI no longer have a computor room nor could use one, even thou my wheel chair has head rest I am too weak to sit up for long periods of time. So my good old computer is set up on a desk in our bedroom and I use a wireless keyboard and mouse. . It only has one bed room. There was a yucky screen room where the past owner just put wood up coverd all the windows and more yuk mess. It's a small room 10 x 16 ft. Mt husband did it all over putting really nice windows . The whole room 3 sides is almost all windows. He put walls and insulation and insulated drop ceiling. He took the door out and a window and opened the room into the living room.we could not even move my plants down and I had twice as many then until the room was finished and we got the electric and A/C and heat put in. We bought the trailer for a thousand dollars. The people that bought our other home was not moving in for a month from sale so gave us time to get the plant room down and heat, it was last Decmeberand we were haivng some pretty cold evenings. One night while they were down there my husband came home and told me he could not get the heat to work. He covered the stands with blakets left the lights on and put lamps into the greenhouse to keep them warm. It worked and next day he got it working :)) It has a tiny ramp for the drop for me to get in and out, I have a long nice table for potting and under it for boxes and soil, pots... supliesThe table is about 12 ft long by 3 ft. my wheel chair rides right up and under it :)) I always keep on hand. It has two light plant stands side by side makes it 8 foot by 2 foot. and fivee of them but 4 are used . On them I have about 10 four foot double light fixtures so about 20 grow light tubes. I have two mini green house and a book shelf some wall shelves in there. This is my garden room now :))
In our kitchen and living room we have many windows. Living room has seven nice windows each growing Streptocarpus all in bloom, Epsicas, African violets.... A coupld of the windows have little end tables covered with blooming plants then a couple shelves going up the windows. Kitchen windows too :))
Yes my husband does everything for me :))
To make story of how wonderful he really is. I needed a lot of care, and when you get sick poeple disapear out of your life. I ened up in a Nursing Home. I lost everything I ever worked for that I could not fit in half of a small Nursing home room. Believe me no Nursing home . It was horrible . No dignity. I never gave up on Fairytales. I had my computor . That's how I met my husband. He took me out of the Nursing home or I'm sure I would have already died in there.
His health went down hill rapidly when he has had a heart attach Jan, 2004. I get a lot of help comes in daily CNA, nurses, Doctors....
Each day is a Blessed Treasure :))
I had never time to grow Av's when I was able to work. I had a good career nice big home new truck, everything going for me. And one day I got home and could not carry my purse in the home or wa;l to the mail box. This can happen to anyone anyday, any age.
So finding the world of African violet the joy of growing them, the life each new leaf brings is such a treasure for me. The sharing of them and making friends all over the world and sharing with each other :))
If I was still working I know I would have never fount these little treasures . And all my AV friends :))
Allison:
Very touching recount of your life. No matter what happens, we can always look for things to be thankful for and find the blessings in our lives, no? Your husband is truly an angel....not just for "rescuing" you from the nursing home (oh you poor dear!!), but for "putting up with" all your plants! ha ha My poor husband....I think if I brought home one more plant of ANY kind, he will jump off the roof! LOL. But he has been so good to put up with me and my plant addiction.
As you said, every day is a wonderful blessing and we could all stand to remember that from time to time. Thank you for helping ME to remember it today.
I enjoy reading all your postings --- so keep on POSTING. =0)
Betsy
Thank you Betsy :)) Your a Blessing and all my AV growing Buddies :))
Allison
AMEN Betsy and Allison! Thank you for the gentle reminder. That makes my day all the more special to know that I am blessed to have spent the day with my DH! He has leukemia and each day I have with him is a treasure! Up and downs, he's been my best friend for over 16years! He's in good real shape now thank Goodness!!!, but one never knows.
{{{ big hug}}} to you Allison, you are a brave gal!
p.s. I know what you mean about being 'sick' and friends disappearing. The same happened with us. I think it must scare folks and remind them of their own mortality. Not sure, but we had 'good' friends who just stopped coming around.
Begonia:
Bless your heart & Glad to hear your DH is doing so well!!!!
Alot of people just aren't quite sure what to say or how to act around those who are sick - - it's rarely that they just don't care. They are just uncomfortable....and, like you said, it SCARES folks. They think "Oh my gosh, that could SO EASILY happen to me." It's a shame it happens though....and sorry you experienced it.
{{{hugs}}}
Betsy
Thanks Betsy!
how about a big AV group HUG! {{{AV FRIENDS}}}
Smile
OH yes Aav friend's are the best. A big hug to all my Av friends.
Lali I am glad your hubby is doing well keep having dtes and enjoying each day :))
Allison
Thank you Allison for your sincere story of blessings.
That has to be tough, when a person needs friends the most. I saw that happen on a small level back in High school. (Influenza followed by Pneumonia etc.) I was suprised who didn't call to see if I was OK, and even more suprised by those who did! That remeinds me...
From now on, anytime I have a day full of people doing me (or anyone else) wrong, and I find my mind condemning humanity, I will think of you and your husband, Allison.
Violets are such a simple pleasure!
And what a wonderful group with which to share it.
Kenton
A beautiful story, Allison!
Your husband sounds like a real sweetheart, but then, so do you!
(you have d-mail)
Cheryl
I got a sucker off of MONQUE! I am SO EXCITED!
Just so everyone knows :)
I also planted a flower stem to see if that works.
Hopefully it will :)
I didn't know you could get more then one plant off of a leaf :) I hope that happens!
Begonia...I don't have any babies as of yet...other then of the episcia...which I have babies of available in tiger stripe and pink panther.
The leaves were just put up this week..>I can post pictures of the leaves right now..but the babies won't show up for another 6 weeks or so :)
Yes...I have an enclosed greenhouse for the leaves..it is a stand up plastic type..which is secondly enclosed by my screen enclosure.
My adults also live out there with a second screened in area for them.
Yup Nan..that is pretty much what I have
My adults live in my florida room...my babies have a lil greenhouse *it is not a huge thing* Just a portable greenhouse I bought at Home depot :)
None of mine are in open air hun :)
They are under streen enclosures *the leaves are under the lil greenhouse to keep them even warmer*
I have a small greenhouse in the back yard. It has a slanted window that faces east, but there are a lot of trees that filter the light. It's a walk-in set up. Mostly we get ready the the vegetable garden there. The av leaves loved it there last spring. First time I tried setting leaves. Not enough room in the house. It seems to me the time was right for only about 6 to 8 weeks. Just enough time to set some leaves. Then I brought them in the house. I really didn't think much at the time about bugs and such. I had a few flowering plants hardening, before planting in the garden; but mostly vegetables.
I'm sorry but be careful good way to get bugs. They even come in screens :(( Allison
