Pretty :) Now Lorry Chimeras will only bloom true is propogate by
sucker babies, or bloom stalks, or bloom basket babies. Even then sometimes they don't bloom true. A Vendor can not sell them if they do not bloom true making Chimera a more rare type of African violets :))

Ann is magnificent!!!!! . Phyliss grows it it's her baby first she said at the show I could buy it for $60.00. ( sometimes most times people sell their show plants) Then she said no and would not even share me a leaf :((, The plant is out of this world and she guards it. She has been showing plants about 30 years and does not give our hee secrets. Ann was a good 23 inches across. My Mom wanted her too . lol
Lorry are you in your share all the time ? Sorry. I am 95 percent bed bound now , as I have ALS " Lou Gehrig" . Each day is a treasure :))

Do any of our AV forum members show their AV's and if so. What is involved in getting a plant to show quality? (is there a thread for this already?)

Allison, amazing that you are able to produce the beauties and still send out plants and leaves despite your difficulties! You GO Girl!

Begonia,

There is a wonderful book "Growing for Show" by Pauline Bartholomew that gives a wonderful explanation of how to prepare plants for show. I don't do shows; however, I have this book and recommend it highly because it contains very good information about AV culture.

Thanks Stephanie! I'll go check it out at Amazon.

Begonia The book Stephanie told you about is best.
I have seen some forums have shows and do all the steps to showing.
Lot's of books have some info about showing but Growing for Show" by Pauline Bartholomew t is best resourse.
I am not able to go to the meetings anymore or the shows, sales nothing :((. But at least I can still play with my Av's and dirt at home.
If you go on AVSA you can find local groups and shows/sales :))
Here is a tiny bit of info I fount on the computer.

Question: I recently visited an African violet show. Many of the violets displayed there were very large, perhaps 18" or more across. Mine have never gotten that large. Can you explain why?

Answer: First, keep in mind that these are showplants. A prize-winning plant is the result of good culture and plenty of TLC. Serious exhibitors also usually grow those varieties that make the best showplants--i.e. large, symmetrical foliage, and heavy bloom.

The most important factor, however, is probably disbudding. Our large showplants are disbudded (not allowed to bud or bloom) continually from 6-8 months to about 6-10 weeks prior to the show. During this time, all of the plant's energy goes into foliage growth, not blossom production. As a result, the leaves grow much larger. While large showplants are often grown in (shallow) pots 6" or larger, violets that aren't going to show do quite well in 4" pots, where they continue to bloom and grow to about 10-12" in diameter. Most exhibitors also use leaf supports, or "rings", which go underneath the outer row of leaves and keep them from bending down over the rim of the pot. This ensures that the leaves are held flat, and are exposed to the maximum amount of light, which promotes more vigorous growth. Besides these differences, culture is the same in virtually every other way

Nanna..I don't have the The Alps yet :)
My husband is buying it for me for Christmas but I WILL save you a sucker when and if I get one :)
I do have a sucker of Monique though which is a pinwheel chimera....I have it posted in my list collection thread...it is a lil more lavendar then The ALPs but once the ALPS is here and old enough to donate to the cause..you will be on the top of the list for one :)

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Lorry, how long have you been growing violets, and how did you get started?

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Uhm well I have had violets since I can remember. I didn't grow them serious until about 3 yrs ago *when I met and married my husband*
I just didn't have the room for them before then as I didn't own a home.
I started just collecting plants and it grew into a love affair and well from there BAM! I was hooked :)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh Nanna...I didn find the ALPS for 10.00 online though WOW...
I think that is a great price and well I talked my hubby into is *Laugh*
