Caught this scene through the windshield last Sat. It looked like threatened snow but not much came. That's OK with me. lol

Interesting colour combo in the sky
Great colours M. Did you get very much? We had some today which was enough to cover the ground. Enough for me. lol
Joan
hortensia, did you plant them? If so, how long did they take to get to that size? I'm curious because I put some snow gum in last summer, and they are going nuts so far...
HI Zeus, yes, I planted them with my own fair, er, dirty hands. In fact they took a year to get to almost that size. Luckily the guy who sold them to me warned me that you need to whack the tops back on a regular basis for the first 2-3 years, it being the nature of eucalypts to form NO, ZERO, ZILCH root system. So I have done this,or,in the case of two nature has done this.
This one is niphophila (as it used to be called,) and the other (which you can't see) is dalrympleana. it has sensational bark and willowish leaves. Will try to get out and take some pics of it, too. I also have neglecta which oddly, has barely grown at all and --is it perriniana??--no, I think it starts with c, the one that has those round coiny leaves florists use.
Why am I so stupid when I have a cold?
At Davis Bay in Sechelt there is a beautiful eucalyptus that is as wide as tall, obviously carefully maintained, the trunk nice and thick (can only see it as I whiz by in someone elses car.)

I have 3 niphophila, also, and one with the round leaves but very small, about the size of a dime...how much should I hack off? They have easily doubled in height in one year!
And, should I trim them every year for a while? would this cause them to branch some more? they are rather scrawny at this point....any info you can give is appreciated!
C.
Mine did that too, most alarming!!!
Jefty of Stone Cottage roses told me to cut it back by at least a third - but in the summer, I think.
here is a link that may be of interest; though looking at it briefly, Ikind of wonder about some of their advice!!! http://www.angelfire.com/bc/eucalyptus/eucgrowing.html
For example, we had to move the round leaf one and though it drooped briefly, there was heavy rain for a week after and it now looks like it has always been there. I hope this wasn't a fluke, since I have to also move the dalrympleana to put up the pergola.
Heres another site http://www.australiaplants.com/Eucalyptus_Info.htm
its kind of frustrating because neither of them say anything about pruning/root growth/
However, it was what I was told, and what I did and out of 5 eucalyptus planted, four are surviving in spite of unusual cold snaps in the last two years...
hope this was helpful
M
