Does this look right to you?

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi - I'm new to this forum, but I have been following along for awhile. I recently obtained these cuttings of Charles Grimaldi, and have been rooting them for a couple of weeks. This is what they look like now - does this look right to you guys? Is there anything more I should be doing? They are rooting in a combination potting soil and perlite, in a "hut type" greenhouse (inside), getting lots of warmth and filtered sun. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks - Karen

karen, welcome to our addiction...i mean fascination...

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Hey there, Karen! Welcome to Hoya's sister addiction.. you'll become as deeply enmeshed in these beauties as we are in Hoyas. Your cuttings look great. The only thing I would suggest is moving those larger cuttings to their own pots, though. They put out a lot of roots and untangling them from each other at transplant time might cause a bit of breakage. JMO, though.
Good to see you!!

Hi Karen, they look great but I agree with Barb. Give each one it's own pot. I usually start with a 4" pot. The taller ones might want to fall over unless they have something to support them.

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Thanks, you guys!! I will follow your advice and move each to it's own pot! Hey Barb - good to see you here!!! Sounds like I've found another addiction to go with the hoyas! Karen

I use the 16 oz red cups sold at Costco in big bags. They are so inexpensive and they are disposable. I just stick a long knife down and poke holes in the bottom along the sides. I love them. They are deeper too which brugs love.

Here is fancy double pink a friend just sent me. She seems to love her cup too. THANKS PINK lady!!!

PS WELCOME KAREN!!! We have a few hoya lovers here. And of course since I am so easily tempted, I am starting to have a few I now have to get! LOL

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Karen,
WELCOME ! looks like you jumped rigth in with staring cuttings :-)
They do look great and personally that size does well for me since I don't have the experience with smaller green cuttings yet.

I also put mine into 4inch pots,
Brigitte

kell,
how long do you leave the cuttings in those containers? and what size do you put them in when you move them?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I try to keep them in them till I can put the plants outside. I then go to 1 gallon, 5 gallon, 15 gallon and if special 20 or 25 gallon.

Corte Madera, CA

there should be a cartoon to go with that!

brug in a 20g pot to the others, "i'm special. i'm in a big pot."

brug in a 25g pot, "i'm really special. i'm INSIDE the HOOPHOUSE."

brugs in 1g pots run and bathe themselves in MESSENGER and alfalfa tea.

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

LOL, Annapet!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Annapet. Poor 1 gallons from seedlings I started in 2004 winter. They never got planted up bigger. And now they are shivering but got a place right next to the house. I have about 100 crowded in there.

Kell - thanks for the tip about the 16 oz. cups - was in Walmart tonight and got some - will pot up this weekend! Thanks - glad I asked you guys! Karen
P.S. Ummm, how big will these guys get before spring??

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Depends on how much you feed them, Karen. Brugs will stay stationary in size if you keep them root bound and do not feed much. I so hate to admit, but I still a lot in red cups from last winter too. And a bunch I moved to gallon cans a few weeks ago. And I have about another 50 in gallon cans from 2 winters ago. But those I have touching the ground and some are now 12 ft tall! But they have a huge root system going from the little gallon can thru the little hole to underground.

Hey, anyone remember when plants were literally sold in gallon tin cans and 5 gallon cans? The nurseries had metal cutters and would slice them open for you if you asked them. God, I am getting old.

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes ma'am, I remember the cans and the cutters. It was a great move for immediate health when they switched to plastic, those cans could deliver some nasty cuts, not sure about long term environmental health re: plastic.

At least there are some retail nurseries who are happy to 'recycle' their used plastic pots to us poor addicts. I don't mind cleaning and sterilizing pots I get for free.

Kell - thanks again for taking time to answer this brug-newbie's questions! I've got 32 cuttings - so, hopefully, I can get the heat situation in my greenhouse fixed before they take over my house! (I live in "freezing-cold Illinois!) My gosh, how many brugs do you have?!?!?! How cool!! Karen

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

maggidew
I always recycle pots too,the matter of fact the last few times I sent my husband on a hunt and he came back with about 75 of them :-)

Yes Kell,I was going to ask you the same question. How many brugs do you have and how many varieties ?
Which ones are the "best" for a beginner, more or less foolproof ?

Karen,I am also new to brugs and have some brugs started in pots. Most of them are trying to root though, some I lost already because the smaller green ones not doing good for me.I don't know what I am doing wrong ? much luckier with hard or semihard cuttings.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh YES, Maggiedew, I have had a few cuts from those cans!

Brigitte, lots of us have trouble with the green ones. This is the wrong time of year also to be rooting them. They do much better earlier. And in spring I can root anything! LOL. In winter, I have great luck using the plastic bag method and also using the rooting plugs. I recently switched to rooting gel also and what a big difference. I figure I need all the help I can get this late in the season for I am going against nature. The plants want to go dormant, not root. I usually do not even try now but I had to cut back some brugs and also I am trying to root more of my RK now. Worse time to do RKs. Th emain hting is to really water only when the pot is dry. Brugs when rooting are very picky about having wet soil around them all the time. Odd too since they will root in water. And I find newly rooted ones, still prefer to on the dry side.

All brugs are actually easy to grow I think. Brugs want to live so much they bounce back from just about anything. As far as rooting, some are just plain difficult, but others are so easy! I have never rooted a Frosty but I am sure they are easy for so many people have that one. The only ones that are hard to root that I have run across are L'Amour, Rothkirch and Red.

I think if you try in the spring you will be surprised how easy they are to root. The trouble is, not many people have pieces then for they want them to grow and did their big trimming in fall. Warm climate people will be the ones to have more cuttings.

I have way too many brugs and so will all of you soon. Once you start making your own seeds, You lose your sanity! I am so curious as to what I will get, I grow out way too many. And when they are little, they are so cute. You forget they get to be 12 ft monsters and take up so much room! Each seed makes a new variety! As far as species, I mostly grow hybrids.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Kell,
that really makes me feel better about the greener cuttings, knowing that it wasn't entirely my fault.

Thanks for all the info and I know HOW curious you are with your brugs just to see what nature has in store for you.
I can undersatnd your exitement .I done alot of daylily crossing this year and will plant some of my seeds after christmas. Also have some smaller DL in the cellar from my seeds last yeard and HOPEFULLY they will bloom for me this year.

How many months in your experience does it take from seeds to bloom ( brugs ) because I am growing some of brugies seeds and have some little seedlings still under plastic.
That is all so EXITING,isn't it ?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, very exciting. LOL. I am afraid to start buying DL. I just know I will go nuts with them. I sure will look forward to seeing what you make in DL!!

I would say you can easily grow them to flower in less than a year if you keep ahead of your brug. I believe the trick is to pot them up to bigger pots as soon as they are ready to go. I tend to keep them in too small a pot for too long and their growth stagnates. And if you are going to grow them in the ground, get them planted as soon as weather permits. Also use Messenger, it gets them blooming much faster.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Messenger ? whats that ? a fertilizer ?

Union City, CA(Zone 9b)

Messenger - what is it ? A fert ? Vitamins ? Hormons ?
Who sells it ? OSH , Home Depot , Lowes , mail order only ?
Sorry I'm not up on everything , but someone else may not know besides me .
I did a search - 400+ replies and not listed/couldn't find in plant files .
TIA - [ thanks in advance ]

Ummm, given how much these have grown in the last ten days, am I going to have to buy a bigger house before spring?? I'm a newbie at brugs, so I had no idea they grew so fast!! BTW, my fear at how fast they are growing is greatly overshadowed by my EXCITEMENT!!!! Karen
