My daughter and family just moved to Del Rio. They have a new house and are putting in the lawn and beds from scratch (with the help of power equipment to bust through the rock! LOL) Since I live in the Pacific Northwest, I have no idea how to help them. We visited there and realize you can use all sorts of agaves, palms, etc. Any idea who in that area is a good resource to chat with re. landscape planning? I emailed the fellow who writes all the Texas landscaping books but received no reply. I'm hoping somebody else can help me out.

Lots of sunshine in the Del Rio area. I'll bet they will enjoy the long growing season and variety of plants they can grow there. You might suggest they contact the County Agent's office and see if they can't find a Master Gardener in Del Rio. Should be a good source of information for gardening in Val Verde County. On a recent deer hunt north of Del Rio I saw the native plant, Mexican Hat had seeded out in several areas on the ranch.
Wow, what a change! Pacific NW to Del Rio! I agree with Txwillie, the local extension office will be a great help.
