Where can I get some Ginger?

Riverview, NB(Zone 5b)

I've got the notion to grow some Ginger so I don't have to buy any Ginger in the store. Does anyone know where I can get it? I want it for the root. Flowers are ok too. :)

Any supermarket that sells fresh ginger-root can bea potential source. I've grown ginger many times over the years from simply planting the fresh ginger root. It makes a decent-looking houseplant.

Thanks Todd.

Could you tell me a bit about growing it?

I thought I'd plant it in a large container. I'm not sure when to up-root it.

Try to find some root that have growing buds at the market, put them in a pot with underneath warmth. When it is warm enough outside, put it in full sun in its pot or directly in your garden. Last summer was so hot that mine grew twice as big. You will not be able to earn money with it since we are far from tropical conditions but it is a nice experience to try. About when to start it... as soon as you find a suitable tuber; the key of succes is warmth and humidity.

Good luck

Thank you, Zarcanat.

I want the ginger to cook with. Will it be eatable? or is it going to be just a plant? I was hoping for both. :)

If I plant a Dahlia tuber, I end up with a lot of extra tuber's in the fall. I was hoping for the same results when I grow some ginger.

You will have some more eatable ginger by the end of summer but do not think you are going to get a lot. The plant itself is quite ordinary. But fresh ginger is wonderfull, not so much fibers, kinda like brand new potatoe ;-)

MMmmmm Sounds good to me. :)

Indian and Pakistani grocers sell ginger.
Cultivated Ginger: Zingiber
Wild Ginger: Asarum
Turmeric: Curcuma
Mango ginger: Curcuma angustifolia
I haven't had luck with Mango Ginger. It is also grown for cut flowers.

Thanks for the different names, UUallace. I appreciate it.

After thought, all seven American groceries (many names) sell garlic treated so it cannot grow. I don't kow about your country or ginger. Your best bet is to buy from and ethnic grocer. I.E. African, Indian, Mid-eastern, Chinese, Italian, Indo-chinese, etc.
