Wish Lists

Silver Spring, MD

I don't think everyone has posted a wish list. Please, don't forget

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

yes wish list are great :)) Post them away , make them good and long :))0

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

ok, what did I miss? where do I post this wish list?

Silver Spring, MD

Some have already been posted of the Spring Swap thread. This might be a good place to post, if you haven't already done so.

Nanna

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

ahhh okay I remember seeing that. My wish list is entirely non-AV so I didn't post there. But since we have a new thread...

pretty much anything I don't have that is not an AV, Episcia or Florist's Glox. is on my wish list!

Yes, I'm greedy! (and easy!) The thing with episcias is that I have many already and not enough space. And with AVs, I used to grow more but now I am "off" AVs for a bit - so it's rare that I see one that I just can't pass up.

As some of you know, I love things with rhizomes tubers etc. because I have that nasty underwatering habit.... But then I also love columnea, codonanthe and aeschynanthus, and.....

I'm also looking for some simple white or blue streptocarpus (or other colors, I suppose) - named varieties preferred. I'm not too keen on frilly or double flowers....

ha ha .. I'm pretty well addicted!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Episcia are fun ! easy to grow, grow fast and large. Right now I only have
CHocolate Soldier , Aussie's Alice, Teddy Bear, Grey Lady, and Blue
Heaven :)) I've grown many but give most away.
I do have a few Chirita's and they root easy. I want to get more. I bought 12 new Streptocarpus plants in Sept. have five alive :)) I over
watered ??? :( But I saved leaves and babies are growing! I don't know
why over watered them ? at least I thought I did as before i grew many plants by leaf !! with no problem ? In the Spring I plan to buy more Strep's from Gary
Out of Africa :))
Now my Albosia Cygnet has been one of my favorite plants for a long time. I have shared many plants from her :)

So we post our "WISH LIST" under the Spring Trade Thread?

Nevada, MO(Zone 6a)

Allison,

I've tortured and killed my fair share of streps throughout the years and have discovered a few things that I was doing wrong. First, I had the grow lights too close to the plants. Now that the lights are further away, the leaves no longer slowly dry up and die. From what I have read, many people just grow them in windowsills and the plants seem to do great. Second, I think I was killing them with water. Initially, most of the information I had about growing streps was from Rob's website, which stated that culture was virtually the same. After researching, I changed my watering ways. I definitely don't water them as much as my violets. What has helped me tremendously is to keep the streps separate from the other gesneriads. Before, I just had all of my gesneriads mixed in together. Obviously, that wasn't working for me.

Dibley's has a book on streps that I am thinking about getting. I just wish I could order plants from him! Such beauties.

Posting under the Easter Swap Thread would be a very central location. Everyone goes there to remember specifics of the trade, wish lists, etc.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Hi Stephanie,
I knew better about watering as I let mine get dry before I do. I thought it was me but maybe they just were not healthy I don't know. Before the ones I got around September I never killed any ? They all came from the same seller. I grow mine in Natural light . I love growing my streps in Natural light. My Epsicas are in natural light. My Chirtas are under lights and when they get full of buds I put them in a window so I can see them better. I took a half dozen or more leaves off my big Chirta to put dow, I love it and growing babies. They root fast. Well Mom is at least 18 inches across now and when she blooms they lasted about a month. And she got a lot of them. The picture I have here was taken in October so she has really grown. I have been lucky with them. I bought three of those Dibley's books about year and half ago. I know I read one. Gave one away with big budding , blooming Strep plant as a contest prize. And I think I sold the other. I ssure wish I could buy plants from them. People are so lucky that can ! Allison

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll link this thread to the top of the Easter Bunny thread, too.... so, either way, your "wish list" should be easy enough for your Secret EB to find. I can see there will be lots of trades going on this spring -- what fun!

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

interesting, Allison. I have the same problem with Chiritas - can't grow them when I get a new plant, but if I start them from leaves, they usually do ok.

My wish would be that I could grow any AV without killing it.
So I have given up on trying but it is so nice to see everyone's beautiful AVs here.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm wishing for any AV with variegated, ruffled or unique leaves. If I had to wish for a 'named' AV, it would be Irish Flirt. After seeing Allison's, I can't stop thinking about it. It has very attractive look-a-likes named 'Irish..._____' Which I saw here http://www.steverd.com/violets/leaves.htm

Otherwise I wish for anything that my SEB can send. I'm not too picky. Thanks so much.
L

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I love variegated or unusual foliage too! I'm a big fan of "girl" foliage, and I adore any AV with pink & white variegation on the leaves, especially if the leaves have those red backs that just make the foliage glow. I've been concentrating more on minis and semiminis lately, both because they're charming and because they let me fit more plants into my space. However, I've also added some large standards this year ('Buckeye Boysenberry,' 'Buckeye Bellringer', 'Grape Slush', 'Apache Victory') because I couldn't resist that gorgeous foliage!

My favorite color is purple, and there seems to be more pink than purple among my AVs now, so purple blooms are on my wish list too. I don't know if I have a favorite flower form, as I love everything from huge fringed blooms to the little fully double ones that remind me of tiny roses... it would be cool to have a wasp one. Some of the chimeras with those striking pinwheel colors are just awesome... I think somebody mentioned maybe having a chimera swap next fall, so I'll have to find one or two that I can propagate for that! I love other bicolor blooms too, from fantasy ones to those with a bright white edge (like the purple with white border that Posy4U was trying to find).

Some varieties that have recently caught my eye are:
'Buckeye Evermore Freckles' or 'B. Cherry Freckles'
'Apache Midnight'
'Deer Trail'
'Irish Irridescence'
'Ness' Crinkle Blue'
'Ultra Violet Dusk'

I'm pretty easy, though... I don't think I've seen a trade list yet that doesn't have at least one variety that just makes my heart turn over!

The fun thing about seeing everyone's wish list is finding varieties that make me say, oooh, yeah, I'd love to have that one too! The more AVs I see, the longer my own wish list gets..... so I'll probably add on to this one as we go along, LOL!

See, I'm already editing! Actually, I just wanted to note here that I'm trying to concentrate on named varieties... but I can be easily swayed by somebody's favorite NoID!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi
My name is Lorry.
I have spoken to some of you under my other name tawny30
My husband is also into plants so I created this name as oyur pay name so we can both be involved.
I have about 60 varieties right now.
I do have some that have the variegation also.
I wanted in on the easter swap but it is closed :(
I would be happy to trade with people though.
Right now I don't have plantlets but I do have leaves.
I am planning on propogating some though.
I am still working on a list and finding pictures.
Right now some of my collection can be seen on the trade list of tawny30 which I will be pulling over to this account :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sounds like the Secret EB trade worked to get the ball rolling for all sorts of spring trade interests -- how cool! Lorry, I'm sorry you missed the closing date, but we wanted to give everyone plenty of time to hunt up & propagate AVs for the EB trade.... as you said, there will be lots of other trades going on in the spring!

oohhh, Allison, I'm going to try hard to find sufficiently tempting goodies for you this spring! 'Orchard Girl', 'Royal Wasp', that chimera.... wow.... you have so many stunning varieties!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I'm not fussy Jill. I like them all :((. Allison

Silver Spring, MD

My wish is to find someone with a bulldozer, who can extend the av room in my house so I can have as many avs as I want. Wish #2 is to have the time and energy to take care of them all.

Nanna

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL, Nanna! I know just what you mean. My AVs are having a little trouble with powdery mildew down in the basement, and I'm thinking the temps might be just a tad chilly for them.... so now I'm eyeing the spare bedroom where all my craft & sewing is, wondering how to rearrange it to fit in a plant stand, and thinking, does this room really have to serve as a secondary guest room also? :-D

Allison, I know you always say that with so many varieties you've never had duplicates in a trade... but I must be collecting varieties from the same sources, because it seems like my photos generally get an enthusiastic "oh, yes, I have that one, and I love it too!" from you! So I'll have to try hard to find varieties on my shelf that you don't already have.... or do a little shopping at The Violet Gallery for you! :-)

Silver Spring, MD

Ho, Ho, Ho, Jill

If you do a little shopping at Violet Gallery, remember your dear friend. I'll send money and postage.

Nanna

Jill, do you think air circulation has something to do with the PdwMildrew?

This message was edited Dec 7, 2005 10:48 AM

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

your correct Nanna Also warm/hot water and water less may help. I know the bedroom will help.
Jill I don't think I have all the same ones you have but I do like them all. lol I have Wonderous Girl , Shiawassee Trail, My Sue , both girl trailers, Simplicity nice Semminiature girl leaf, Ultra violet dusk and Sassy Shell. Electric Cowboy,I have leaves down of skagit Tiny Limelite I am hoping for I bought them from Violet Gallery and they were so small.,It's a Vintage with white, pink green edge flowers :)).White Madonna, White Butterfly both Vintage, just a few girl leaf I have I can think of.
It's all in the fun !

I do like them all :)) Allison

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I would not shop at The Violet Gallery without inviting you along, Nanna -- either virtually or literally! :-)

The plants downstairs are spaced the same under the lights as the ones upstairs, so I don't think air circulation is a factor. My guess is that it's a temperature thing. It's not too bad (at least not yet), and I may see if it helps to turn on the heat mats.... although I only have enough space on the mats for about half of the downstairs violets... i don't think they are too wet, and they do get warm water. I'll try some things and see what happens. I'm hoping not to have to spray because of having to dry off so many little leaves, but something like hydrogen peroxide water with a little epsom salts might help.... we'll see if they need it.
