Lord help me now, I did an online search for DIL today, to help her out with some info on Brugmansias, and discover the American Brugmansia And Datura site- it's all over for me, I'm in love!
My first love is hostas, but about 13 years ago, someone was growing a few Brugs here in Georgia, no doubt brought up from Florida, and they gave me some. Sorry, but one was pink, one was yellow that turned orangy, one was yellow, and one was white; I'm guessing one of them was Dr Suess. I kept them for many years, saving them over the winter, and gave all of them to my DIL about five years ago. She's lost all but the yellow one, by now. Now I know what I'm going to get her for Christmas. Ah, cuttings!!
So, several weeks ago I noticed on the plant trading forum that some one had about 8-10 varietes to trade, and I thought, "Wow, there's that many varieties, eh!!"
Pretty funny, after I just looked at hundreds of named varieties on the ABAD site, didn't even get through all of them and I should have known, eh? Such a beautiful and fertile plant to play with and hybridize has got to have lots of people participating and coming up with some incredible hybrids.
So, just an idle question............ but who do ya'll buy from- who's your favorite for selection and price. What's the hot Brug out there right now that everybody has to have??
Brenda/ usually over amongst the hosta folk and in zone 7b!
I'm sunk!
I welcome you Brenda with open arms!!! You have found a second home here on Dave's. I think they all are hot but people are in double pink tizz it seems! Right now, cutting season is over but seed season is here. So I bet you will have the most fun growing out some seed and having your own unique brugs to love.
And you know what? You can grow your hostas under your brugs. LOL
Hey, Kell,
Thanks for the welcome, and yes, I can have the best of both worlds with Brugs and hostas, eh?
I'm already planning on a long row of Brugs along the front on my property, about 80' worth!! Any recommendations about nurseries that have nice plants or do I spend hours and hours online, looking up nurseries and associations? Gee, I would hate that!!
Or any neat sites I would love??
BTW, it sometimes get's down to the teens or single digits here in the winter- last winter it was 9 degrees for one night. My DIL just mulched her Brugs and they came back up, all of them!
oh, my. brugs has a new victim, er....fan =)))). brenda, a warm welcome from soggy corte madera.
it's super addicting. once you've posted here, it's too late. no one can save you anymore.
=)
There is no hope for you now Brenda!
Welcome Brenda!! Do you know the number of your zone??
Watch Out!!!! Another Brug-maniac on the loose!! LOL Welcome!
You will find out that these really nice people are your support group. You will learn things that you just wouldn't believe! But the most important thing is having fun with people that support your addiction. I know because I have it too!!
Melanie
Thanks, all, for the warm welcome- know how that goes! The more the merrier, and the more, the sharier!!
Sherry (?), I'm in zone 7b, like Melanie, who is my not too distant neighbor! Yea! Support my new habit!
Now I have another addiction, poor DH doesn't know yet, or he would quickly evacuate the premises!! Hostas about did him, and his pocketbook, in!! We won't tell him just yet, okey? Spare him for a while longer!:)))
Brenda
Brenda, you certainly came to the right place. Welcome! There are so many pros on here (all the above being pros) and I'm just a newbie. However, I haven't cut all mine yet as our weather has held out and I'll have some cuttings after this last flush of blooms. Hopefully they will beat the cold weather. Got down to about 42 last night, but don't worry, I'll get the cuttings if we are going to gave a freeze. I think I can make it. I think I can! I think I can! All I have to offer this year is cuttings from a Dr. Suess (the yellow that turned orangey that you mentioned) and a pretty peachy that I don't know the name of. Next year I'll have lots to trade as I've got about 20 rooting of differnet ones. If you want cuttings from these, just let me know.
Barbara
Wholyhosta how far are you from Tallapoosa? I got my 1st one there, then got my new ones from here a lady who has started and uncontrolable desire to have one of each. LOL
I told DH I want money for Christmas to buy more. My basement is looking like a good place to start them up as DH got me a grow light for my Birthday. I have the 5 in jars in the window and they are beginning to grow.
Lavina
Thank you for your welcome and offer, Barbara. I don't have any to trade, except Dr. Suess. That's why I'm looking for nurseries that carry these beauties in my area or purchase online.
I live NE of Atlanta, about 70 miles and close to where the Appalachan Trail starts in the Georgia mountains. We live in a rural area, nearest town of any size is about 15 miles away.
Good luck with all your cuttings, and seed starting this winter!
Brenda
Oh gosh Brenda... Welcome to our madness!! I have cuttings of Versi peach, an unknown white and an unknown yellowy-peach I can send you. Send me a D Mail with your address if you would like them.
Like Barbara, in the Spring I would be happy to share several others with you.
I have been very blessed by many DG ers with cuttings this Fall also.
Enjoy and God bless, Margo
Brenda, take advantage of Margo's offer......she is such a sweetie! We used to work together years ago and we "found" each other here in the garden! She sent me great cuttings that are doing great in only 2 weeks! She really helped me out to get going for next summer.
Barbara
Hi Brenda! Welcome from another somewhat new fanatic of Brugs. I think we're in about the same zone - 7a/7b. I'm 25 miles south of Huntsville, AL up on top of Brindlee Mtn. My parents used to have a summer home in Blairsville, so I'm familiar with your area of the country.
I've received some cuttings from the generous people here on DG, so in the Spring I would be glad to share with you also. Don't rush out to buy them. We'll get you started with a good variety.
Barb
Brenda,
You need to start checking your D-mail. There is no need to wait until Spring, and you don't need to shop eBay.
