What a pretty picture. First snowfalls are always so special.

Would you like us to send boots and mitts?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOLOL.......echoes you are sooooooo bad ;). Lovely picture hortensia! Ü Hope you have tires with good treads.

Snowing here and very cold for several days now. Dont mind the snow but the cold sure takes getting used to! Gotta get out and shovel soon!

Langley, BC, BC(Zone 8b)

Go ahead you meanies, laugh laugh. What is a mitt???? :>)

Fancyvan, is it windy there too?? I visited Calgary once in midsnowstorm. Could NOT believe it; joking aside, I realize I am hopeless at really understanding how COLD cold is. I grew up on the coast here, and though you get really nasty bonechilling wetness (where the sea and the air feel like one, OM) it just isn't the same as those shockingly low temperatures.

When I moved to Chilliwack, though it was certanly colder than I was used to, the horrible winter phenomenon were the winds that whistled across the Sumas flats. Constant whiteouts on the freeway...

I'm sitting here looking out at my back garden layered in white, certainly an improvement on the fall look!!!

At this moment the official temp in Calgary is posted as -18C with the Real Feel temp (love that ) -24. Predicted to go down to Real Feel -32 tonite!
Then it will gradually warm - so they say -to just above freezing by Tuesday!

Need to go out and get the block heater cable out from under the hood of the car! It will start without but still better to use it.( Need to go out later today but not for long and no off leash for the dogs just around the block! )And of course although I thought about it when it was warmer didnt do anything. Still have some outdoor Xmas lights to put up but they can wait until next week.

Well if you grew up there, that's OK then. I didn't want to be mean. Just a teeeny wee bit of humour? All I could muster up at the time. Mitts are those things you put over your hands to get hot things out of the oven. They also have them that fit a little better, for outdoors activities. Also gloves, just like the dentists and doctors wear, only in wool or leather, to be more stylishly warm. You may have even seen those. Maybe you should just stay indoors until it warms up again in a week or so. Whatever you do, don't go out at night, it gets below freezing then. Please take care.

YOW! Fancyvan, we have not been lower than -18 C in the last 7 years! And then, that's in late Feb-early March. Our coldest day so far this fall has been 2 C...it's been 6-10 C in the last week. No snow at all yet but the 's' word was mentioned as a possibility for mid next-week. I still have Crocus speciosus blooming like mad. I often gripe about the weather in St. John's but it's usually the New Year before the weather really turns wintery...mind you, you folks in Alberta may be enjoying 20 C in April when I'll still have to wait a month or more!

Hortensia, enjoy the snow now as you won't have to worry about it by Feb. when spring kicks in for you. I may not be shovelling yet but could certainly be doing it into April.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

it's a freak of nature, snow in BC including Victoria, yet no snow in St John's! I doubt that has happened many times.

Langley, BC, BC(Zone 8b)

You are all right. Snow this early has my youngest daughter fantasizing a white christmas -- the stuff of fairytales to her--- whatever snow we get is usually AFTER the new year. It isn't really all that cold, either, just a feak concatenation of systems. Here are my eucalypts:

Hope the cold didn't last long enough to hurt anything in your garden, Hortensia. Lovely pictures though.

Last year Dill Pickle found a particular kind of sled that my darling grandson in Victoria 'could not live without'. He has finally used it when it snowed in Victoria. Now -of course - he wants more snow.

Beautiful sunny day here again, with the depressing brown unraked leaves showing through ( oh joy ) When my daughter was little in Chilliwack we had two really deep snowstorms, one followed by an icestorm that left a kind of honey glaze over everything. I have pictures of her crawling around the back yard on her belly --- 3 feet off the ground!

Anyway, I think it warped her for the coast for life; she is always sighing and wishing we could have a white Christmas "like the old days".

Echoes, thanks so much for the tip, I'm going to have to get some of those mitt things, they sound just dandy :>)

oh and ps (meanies aren't mean, they're siblings)

I've been mostly in bed with a truly rotten cold for a few days, thinking how nice it was to be able to chat with all of you "from far and wide"

Hope you are feeling better Marian. Don't need a cold any time, never mind this busy time of year.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

thanks all!!!

better enough to start the annual Christmas cookie baking with my daughter and her friend..."shape cookies" the first of the season -- you know, those inedible sprinkled things, after which we move on to tastier stuff; but ALWAYS ALWAYS they insist on shape cookies first.

Can you imagine them explaining this to THEIR kids????

Oh my gosh, Lilypon!!! My first "lurk" into Canada in a long time, and you all have turned into popcicles. I braved the 45° cold this AM and went outside. In order to stay I would have needed some of those "mitts" to hold on to the cold metal of the walker. LOL It will be 71° this afternoon........just remember, there's always room for a refugee from the cold at my house!
Pati

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Oh Pati you have no idea how tempting that offer is! We still have the same humidity but much more moderate temps (for the next three days) and then we will be dropping again. :(

It's sooooooooo good to see you back! :D Ü :D I was starting to worry when I read you had picked up an infection after your surgery.

hortensia sounds like your feeling better if your thinking of making food. Ü
